What is IELTS™ (International English Language System) Exam?
The IELTS exam is the most widely accepted standardised test to check the English language proficiency level of candidates belonging to non-English speaking countries. IELTS test you on all four of your language skills i.e. Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing. It gives you a band score out of 9 in each of these skills. A good band score in your IELTS exam (generally 6+) enables you to study or work in English-speaking countries like Australia, Canada, UK, USA and Ireland.
IELTS is an abbreviation for “International English Language Testing System” and is the best recognized English proficiency exam globally. Like any other language exam, IELTS also tests your English proficiency in READING, WRITING, LISTENING AND SPEAKING. IELTS Academic
One will opt to give IELTS Academic test if planning to pursue higher education like Diploma /Bachelor’s / Master’s courses at universities, Colleges or institutes abroad.
IELTS Academic test is a notch difficult than IELTS general exam as it checks the English ability of the candidate for an academic setting such as a university or research programs.
Only the Reading and Writing sections of IELTS Academic are different from that of IELTS General, while Speaking and Listening exams are more or less similar in both the exams.
IELTS General
One will opt for IELTS General if planning to migrate for work experience, job, immigration or permanent residency to English speaking countries
IELTS general exam will test your English language proficiency in a more practical, routine and general life context. The test is a notch easier than the IELTS academic one, but band requirements to qualify are generally high. So a better preparation under an experienced trainer is always advisable.
Currently IELTS exam is available in 2 formats, pen-paper based and the recently launched computer-based (CBT). In pen-paper-based, test-takers follow the traditional way of giving exams by using the printed question paper and writing down the answers on an answer sheet. On the other hand, students opting for IELTS computer-based exam will give all the answers using the computer itself.
The advantage of IELTS CBT is that you get the results within a day only, whereas, the results for pen and paper exam can take upto 2 weeks.
