What is GRE?
GRE stands for Graduate Record Examination. GRE is a globally accepted standardized exam for candidates planning to pursue their post-graduation from abroad. GRE is a multiple-choice, computer-based exam designed to assess a candidate’s critical & analytical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
The GRE is conducted by ETS and is designed to provide premium degree offering institutions abroad with common benchmark for comparing applicants’ abilities to study in there. The GRE tests basic mathematics, data analysis, and UG level vocabulary.

GRE® is the short form for “Graduate Record Examination”. It assesses you on your verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking and analytical writing skills.
Let’s understand the GRE Test Format:
- Duration of the GRE® test is 3.45 hrs. You need to attempt total of 3 sections.
- GRE® is a computer based and an adaptive exam where the machine would decide the level of the next question to be asked, depending on your answer to the previous question. A correct answer to a question will make the next question a little more difficult.
- You are allowed to skip the question if you don’t know the answer and move on to the next one. The skipped questions can be reattempted if you wish to within the stipulated time period.
The GRE registration process is quite a simple one, Just Visit the official GRE website https://www.ets.org/gre/test-takers/general-test/register.html and follow the simple instructions given on their portal.
One can take the GRE General Test once every twenty-one (21) days, up-to maximum of 5 times within any continuous rolling 1 year or 365 days period.
ETS, the conducting body of the GRE exam sends an email notification of the results to the test takers when the result is released. GRE test takers are then required to check their ETS account for their results. It takes 10-15 days to receive the score card with a validity of 5 years.
The GRE scoring system follows the scale of 130 – 170 in each of the sections.
For the GRE General Test:
- Verbal Reasoning: score scale between 130 – 170 with 1 point increment
- Quantitative Reasoning: score scale between 130 – 170 with 1 point increment
- Analytical Reasoning: 0 – 6 with ½ point increment
For the GRE Subject Test:
- All subject tests score scale 290 – 990 with 10 point increment
