Degree Levels, Intakes and How to Apply

September is the main intake and the only one that covers every university, including Trinity College Dublin and University College Dublin. A January intake exists at some universities, but only for selected postgraduate courses and with fewer scholarships. Irish universities use rolling admissions, so popular courses can fill months before the published deadline. Apply early, ideally 10 to 12 months before your start date.

Eligibility and English Language Requirements

For a bachelor's degree, Irish universities accept Class 12 from CBSE, ICSE and most state boards, but the marks they expect differ by university and course. Engineering and science courses also ask for specific subjects. For a master's degree, you need a relevant bachelor's degree with the minimum percentage or grade set by the university, and some courses ask for work experience or a portfolio.

You also need to prove your English. Most universities ask for an overall IELTS score of around 6.0 to 6.5, and some accept TOEFL, PTE or Duolingo instead. Do not skip the smaller names. Universities such as Maynooth, Galway and Limerick often give generous scholarships and smaller classes, and their graduates compete well in the same job market as Dublin's big names.

Cost of Studying in Ireland

Non-EU students pay full international fees, which commonly fall between €10,000 and €30,000 a year depending on the university and subject, with medicine and some specialised courses costing more. Add living costs of roughly €12,000 to €18,000 a year, with Dublin at the higher end.

Scholarships for Indian Students

The Government of Ireland International Education Scholarship is the best known award, and most universities run their own merit scholarships, often a partial tuition waiver or a fixed amount off each year. Some universities also run awards aimed at specific countries, including India. Deadlines fall early, so research scholarships at the same time as you shortlist universities.

How to Apply to an Irish University Step by Step

1. Shortlist courses and check that each one is on the approved list for non-EEA student immigration. A course that is not listed cannot get a student visa.
2. Take your English test and confirm the score each university requires.
3. Apply through CAO or directly with transcripts, a statement of purpose, references and your English score.
4. Accept your offer and pay at least €6,000 of the first-year fee by bank transfer, since colleges do not take cash.
5. Prepare your finances, usually with six months of bank statements or an education loan sanction letter, and buy private medical insurance.
6. Apply for your study visa online and submit your documents, and biometrics if your office asks for them.
7. Travel and register for your Irish Residence Permit within 90 days of arrival.

Ireland Student Visa for Indian Applicants

Indian students need a D-type long-stay study visa for any course longer than 90 days. The course must be full-time and approved for non-EEA students. Ireland is moving from its Interim List of Eligible Programmes to a new TrustEd framework, so ask your university to confirm that your course qualifies before you pay a deposit.

Visa officers care most about two things: where your money came from and whether you are a genuine student. After You Arrive: IRP and Stamp 2

Your visa only lets you enter Ireland. Within 90 days you must register with Irish immigration and receive your Irish Residence Permit, which carries your Stamp 2 permission to study and work part-time. The registration fee is €300, and you renew the permission every year while you study.

Working While You Study

On Stamp 2 you can work up to 20 hours a week during term time and up to 40 hours a week during official holiday periods. Minimum wage in Ireland is around €14 an hour in 2026, so a part-time job can cover food and transport, but not tuition. Working even a few hours over the limit can be flagged through employer payroll records and put your renewal at risk.

Most students cannot bring family members. The rules are narrow and mainly affect PhD students, so check the current position with the Irish Immigration Service before planning for a spouse or children.

After Graduation: The Stay-Back Permission

The Third Level Graduate Programme, known as Stamp 1G, lets you stay and work full-time in any field after you finish your course. Bachelor's graduates receive 12 months, and master's and PhD graduates receive 24 months. You do not need a job offer to apply. To stay longer, you move to an employment permit such as the Critical Skills Employment Permit, which needs a qualifying job and salary.

Common Mistakes Indian Students Make

• Choosing a course that is not approved for student immigration. The visa will be refused, however good the offer letter is.
• Paying less than the required tuition. Pay at least €6,000, or the full fee if it is lower, before you apply.
• Moving money in at the last minute. Large deposits that appear just before the application raise questions.
• Writing a generic statement of purpose. Explain why this course, this university and why you will return.
• Leaving applications late. Rolling admissions mean popular courses fill early.
