The GMAT exam (Graduate Management Admission Test) is a computer-based test that business schools around the world use to judge a candidate's readiness for an MBA or another management programme. It is owned and administered by GMAC (Graduate Management Admission Council) and accepted by more than 7,000 programmes at over 2,400 business schools, including top MBA destinations in the USA, Canada, UK and Europe. Since November 2023, every GMAT exam taken is the GMAT Focus Edition, a shorter and more data-driven format than the old test. This guide breaks down the GMAT exam pattern, GMAT syllabus, fees, registration, scoring and GMAT preparation in plain language, so you can plan your test with confidence.

205 to 805 GMAT total score range
2 hrs 15 min Quant, Verbal and Data Insights
5 years GMAT score validity

What Is the GMAT Exam?

The GMAT exam is a standardised admission test built specifically for business school hopefuls. Unlike broader graduate tests, every section of the GMAT syllabus is designed around the kind of reasoning, data reading and problem-solving that MBA coursework actually demands. If an MBA, an MiM or a specialised master's in business is on your study abroad list, there is a strong chance your target school will ask for a GMAT score.

There is no pass or fail mark in the GMAT exam. You receive a scaled score for Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Data Insights, plus one combined total score, and each business school decides what range works for its class profile. That is why the first real step in any GMAT preparation plan is checking the average GMAT score at your shortlisted schools. Our exam preparation page explains how our mentors help you plan this alongside your MBA university shortlist.

GMAT Focus Edition vs the Classic GMAT

If you have read older articles or heard from someone who took the GMAT a few years ago, the format they describe is probably gone. GMAC retired the Classic GMAT in 2024, and the GMAT Focus Edition is now the only version offered anywhere in the world.

Feature GMAT Focus Edition (current) Classic GMAT (retired)
Duration 2 hours 15 minutes 3 hours 7 minutes
Sections Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, Data Insights Quant, Verbal, Integrated Reasoning, Analytical Writing
Essay writing Removed Analytical Writing Assessment included
Total score scale 205 to 805 200 to 800
Section order Candidate chooses the order of all three sections Fixed order

Every GMAT exam booked today is automatically the GMAT Focus Edition, so any GMAT preparation material you use should match this current format, not the retired one.

GMAT Exam Pattern and Syllabus

The GMAT syllabus under the Focus Edition covers three equally weighted sections, adding up to 64 questions across 2 hours and 15 minutes, plus one optional 10-minute break. There is no negative marking for a wrong answer.

Section Questions Time
Quantitative Reasoning 21 questions 45 minutes
Verbal Reasoning 23 questions 45 minutes
Data Insights 20 questions 45 minutes

Quantitative Reasoning in the GMAT exam now focuses on problem-solving questions only, with geometry and data sufficiency questions dropped from the GMAT syllabus. Verbal Reasoning covers critical reasoning and reading comprehension, with sentence correction removed. Data Insights is the newest section, and it tests how well you read graphs, tables, multi-source data and two-part analysis questions, a skill that mirrors what analysts and managers actually do on the job. Quant and Verbal remain computer-adaptive, meaning the difficulty of each question depends on how you answered the one before it, while you can choose the order in which you attempt the three sections on test day.

How Is the GMAT Score Calculated?

Each of the three sections, Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Data Insights, is scored on a scale of 60 to 90, in one-point increments, and all three carry equal weight. These section scores combine into your GMAT total score, which ranges from 205 to 805, in 10-point increments.

  • 655 and above: a strong GMAT score that puts you in a competitive band for most top-ranked MBA programmes.
  • 595 to 655: a solid, widely accepted GMAT score for a large number of good business schools.
  • Below 595: can still work for many programmes, particularly when strong work experience and a well-written application essay support your candidacy.

Your official GMAT score report also carries an Analytical Writing note only if you separately opt for it, since the Focus Edition itself does not include an essay task. A GMAT score stays valid for 5 years from your test date, and you can retake the GMAT exam once every 16 days, up to five times within a rolling 12-month period, with a lifetime cap of eight attempts.

What GMAT Score Do You Need?

The GMAT score you should target depends on the calibre of business school you are aiming for, the programme type and the country. The ranges below are typical, but always check the latest class profile data on your target school's website.

Goal Typical GMAT Score Notes
Top global MBA programmes 665 and above Highly ranked schools often report class averages in this band
Mid-tier and regional MBA programmes 595 to 655 Wide acceptance range across strong, less name-brand schools
Master in Management (MiM) 575 to 645 Requirements vary widely by school and country
Executive MBA Often flexible or optional Work experience and seniority typically weigh more heavily

Deciding on your target countries early makes GMAT preparation more focused. If the USA is on your list, our USA destination page outlines where the GMAT usually fits into MBA admissions. For MBA and management programmes in Canada, our Canada destination page breaks down typical expectations, and for business programmes in Europe, our Germany destination page covers what public and private business schools there generally ask for.

GMAT Exam Fee, Registration and Test Dates

The GMAT exam fee in India is around ₹23,200 for a test centre attempt and about ₹25,400 for the online version. Fees are set by GMAC in US dollars and converted at the time of booking, so always check the current amount on the official mba.com website before you pay. Registration happens entirely online through your mba.com account.

  1. Create your mba.com account with your personal details, exactly as they appear on your passport.
  2. Choose your delivery mode, a test centre appointment or the GMAT Online option.
  3. Pick your section order in advance, one of the flexibility features unique to the Focus Edition.
  4. Select a test date and slot that leaves you comfortable room before application deadlines.
  5. Add your free score recipients. You can send your GMAT score to selected business schools at no extra cost during registration.
  6. Pay the GMAT exam fee by credit or debit card, and save your confirmation email.

You must be at least 18 years old to register on your own, and candidates under that age need a parental consent form. Book your GMAT exam two to three months before your earliest application round, since this leaves room for a retake if your first attempt falls short. If you are juggling GMAT preparation alongside essays, recommendation letters and school shortlisting, our services team can help you plan your test date against your full MBA application timeline.

Test Centre vs GMAT Online

The GMAT exam can be taken at a test centre or through GMAT Online from home, and both formats carry the same content, timing and scoring, with schools treating the results identically. At a test centre, you sit at a proctored workstation in a controlled environment. With GMAT Online, a remote proctor monitors you through your webcam for the entire session, and you need a quiet private room, a reliable webcam and stable internet.

Pick the format that lets you focus best. A test centre suits candidates who do not have a distraction-free space at home, while GMAT Online works well if travel is inconvenient or you simply perform better in familiar surroundings. Either way, complete at least two full-length, timed mock tests under real exam conditions before your actual GMAT exam.

How to Prepare for the GMAT Exam

Most candidates need 2 to 4 months of consistent GMAT preparation to move from a baseline score to a competitive range, depending on their starting comfort with quant and data-heavy questions. Begin with a full-length diagnostic test, then build your study plan around your weakest section, since a low score anywhere pulls down your GMAT total score.

  • Quantitative Reasoning: sharpen arithmetic, algebra and word-problem skills, since problem-solving is now the only question type in this section of the GMAT syllabus.
  • Verbal Reasoning: practise critical reasoning questions for logical gaps and assumptions, and work on reading comprehension speed for longer business-style passages.
  • Data Insights: get comfortable reading graphs, tables and multi-source data quickly, since this section blends light quant with interpretation skills many candidates have never formally practised.
  • Full-length mocks: take timed, adaptive mock tests regularly and experiment with different section orders to find what feels most comfortable on test day.

Official GMAC practice tests and the GMAT Official Starter Kit are the closest match to the real GMAT exam, so save them for your final rounds of practice. If you prefer guided support, structured GMAT preparation with regular feedback on your data insights accuracy and pacing can shorten your prep timeline considerably. Our exam preparation courses include section-wise practice and mentor feedback so you can track your GMAT score improvement week by week.

GMAT vs GRE

Many MBA applicants weigh the GMAT exam against the GRE exam, since a large number of business schools now accept either score. The right pick depends on your strengths and where else you plan to apply.

Feature GMAT GRE
Score scale 205 to 805 260 to 340 (Verbal and Quant), Writing scored separately
Focus Business-specific reasoning and data insights Broader academic reasoning, useful for MS, PhD and MBA together
Best for Candidates set on MBA and business school admissions Candidates keeping MS and MBA options open at the same time
Accepted by Business schools primarily Most graduate schools, and a growing number of business schools

If you are certain about an MBA and nothing else, a dedicated GMAT preparation track built around Data Insights and business-style verbal questions often pays off faster than a generalist GRE preparation plan.

Common Mistakes in the GMAT Exam

  • Studying from Classic GMAT material that still covers Integrated Reasoning, Analytical Writing or sentence correction, none of which appear in the current GMAT syllabus.
  • Ignoring Data Insights during GMAT preparation, since it is newer and less familiar than Quant or Verbal.
  • Picking a section order on test day without ever practising that order in a full-length mock.
  • Skipping timed, adaptive mock tests and being caught off guard by the pacing of a 45-minute section.
  • Booking the GMAT exam too close to an application round deadline, leaving no time for a retake.
  • Registering with a name that does not exactly match the passport, which can cause entry issues at the test centre.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good GMAT score?

A GMAT score of 655 or above is considered strong for most top-ranked MBA programmes, while a score between 595 and 655 remains widely competitive at a large number of good business schools. What counts as good depends heavily on the specific programme's class profile.

How long is a GMAT score valid?

A GMAT score stays valid for 5 years from your test date. Most business schools accept scores within this window, though it is worth confirming with each programme directly.

How many times can I take the GMAT exam?

You can retake the GMAT exam once every 16 days, up to five times within a rolling 12-month period, with a lifetime limit of eight attempts in total.

Is the GMAT Focus Edition the same as the old GMAT?

No. The GMAT Focus Edition, launched in November 2023, replaced the Classic GMAT completely. It is shorter, drops the Analytical Writing Assessment, and adds a Data Insights section in place of Integrated Reasoning.

How long does it take to get GMAT results?

Unofficial section and total scores appear on screen right after you finish the GMAT exam. Your official score report is usually available within a few business days through your mba.com account.

Is the GMAT exam hard?

It depends on how comfortable you are with data-heavy questions and timed, adaptive testing. Most candidates find Data Insights the least familiar section at first, but structured GMAT preparation with regular mock tests improves scores noticeably within a few weeks.

Can I get into a good MBA programme without the GMAT exam?

Sometimes. A number of business schools offer GMAT waivers or accept the GRE exam instead, especially for candidates with strong work experience or an existing academic background in a quantitative field. Our services team can help you shortlist MBA programmes that fit your profile, with or without a GMAT score.
