The TestDaF exam (Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache) is a standardised German language test that proves you can study at a German university. It is run by the TestDaF-Institut in Bochum, it is recognised by German universities, and the certificate does not expire. You are scored from TDN 3 to TDN 5 in each of four skills, and most universities want TDN 4 in every one. This guide explains the TestDaF exam pattern, TestDaF syllabus, TestDaF score rules, TestDaF exam fee, registration in India and TestDaF preparation, so you can decide if this is the right test for your Germany plan.
TestDaF tests German as it is used at university: following a lecture, reading a long academic text, describing a graph in writing and explaining your opinion out loud. It sits between CEFR levels B2 and C1, which is the level German universities expect from students who will study in German.
The test is the same everywhere in the world, so a certificate earned in Delhi carries the same weight as one earned in Berlin. That is the main reason Indian applicants like it. Unlike DSH, which is set by each university, TestDaF can be taken in India and used for many applications at once. There is no entry requirement, but you should be comfortable at B2 before you book. Below that, the tasks feel very fast.
You need TestDaF if you plan to study a German-taught degree and your university asks for proof of language skills. Here is how it usually plays out.
You may not need it at all. Many English-taught programmes ask for IELTS or TOEFL and only a basic level of German. If that is your route, our Masters in Germany guide and our Bachelors in Germany guide explain how the language rule changes by programme. If your school certificate is not accepted for direct entry, the Studienkolleg route usually asks for B1 or B2 German instead, so TestDaF can wait until later.
Most candidates in India take the digital TestDaF on a computer at an authorised centre. The total time is 190 minutes, which is about 3 hours 10 minutes, plus breaks. All four papers are taken on the same day.
| Section | Duration | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Reading (Leseverstehen) | 55 minutes | Read several academic and everyday texts and answer questions on main ideas, details and the writer's view |
| Listening (Hörverstehen) | 40 minutes | Listen to dialogues, interviews and lecture extracts, generally played once, and answer questions |
| Writing (Schriftlicher Ausdruck) | 60 minutes | Two tasks: describe and interpret a graphic, then write a structured argument on an academic topic |
| Speaking (Mündlicher Ausdruck) | 35 minutes | Seven tasks spoken into the computer, such as giving information, describing a graphic and defending a position |
There is also a paper-based version, but it is offered in Germany only. The digital test has more dates and faster results, so it is the sensible choice for applicants in India. The speaking section is recorded and marked later by trained raters, so you talk to a screen rather than to an examiner.
The TestDaF syllabus has no fixed grammar list or vocabulary book. It checks whether you can handle real university situations. Topics come from student life, science, society, media, education and work, and the language is formal.
In short, the TestDaF syllabus rewards organised, academic German. Many B2 learners know enough grammar but lose points because they have never practised describing a graph or building an argument under a timer.
TestDaF does not give one overall mark. You receive a separate level for each skill, called a TDN (TestDaF-Niveaustufe), and a TDN 3, 4 or 5 appears for Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking. A skill below TDN 3 receives no level.
| Level | Approximate CEFR | What it means for admission |
|---|---|---|
| TDN 5 | C1 (upper range) | Strong result, meets the highest language requirements |
| TDN 4 | Upper B2 to lower C1 | The usual requirement, often written as "TDN 4 in all four skills" or "4x4" |
| TDN 3 | B2 | Accepted by a few programmes, sometimes if other skills are higher |
| Below TDN 3 | Under B2 | No level awarded for that skill |
Here is a simple example. A candidate scores TDN 4 in Reading, Listening and Speaking, and TDN 3 in Writing. That is a good result, but it misses the usual 4x4 rule. Some universities will accept it and others will not, so check each programme before you apply. Balanced practice matters more than being excellent in one skill.
Digital results are usually released in about three weeks, and the paper version takes longer. Competitive programmes can ask for TDN 5 in some skills, so confirm this on the course page.
You register online through the official TestDaF portal. Test centres in India cannot take registrations directly. Digital sessions are listed through the year, and dates published for late 2026 include 12 November and 10 December. Registration usually closes about two weeks before the exam, and Indian centres fill early, so book well ahead.
The published TestDaF exam fee is EUR 210 for the digital test. The fee is set by country and centre, and Indian guides quote different amounts, so treat any figure you read online as a guide and confirm the exact price in your portal before you pay. In India the test is available at Goethe-Institut and Max Mueller Bhavan centres, including New Delhi, along with some partner centres.

Book Free Counselling →Reach the centre early with your passport and your admission notice. Phones, smartwatches and notes are not allowed at your desk. The four papers run in one sitting with short breaks, so the day is tiring, and the speaking section comes when your focus is already low.
Do at least two full mock tests in one sitting before the real day. It builds stamina, and it shows you which section is dragging your score down. Test the headset and the microphone at the start of the speaking paper, and speak steadily rather than fast.
TestDaF preparation depends on your starting point. Learners who already have a solid B2 often need a few focused months, while learners coming up from B1 need longer. Practise the exact tasks the exam sets, not just general German.
If you are in North India, our German language classes in Delhi take you from A1 up to the B2 and C1 levels needed for university German, with mock tests along the way. You can also read how we support other test takers on our exam preparation page.
Four German tests are commonly accepted for admission. They differ in who sets the exam, where you can sit it and how it is scored, so pick the one your university names.

A common path for Indian students is to learn German to B2 or C1, take TestDaF from Delhi and apply to several universities with one certificate. If you are already in Germany, DSH can be cheaper, but it is set by each university and cannot be reused everywhere.
The TestDaF exam is a standardised German language test for university admission in Germany. It measures Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking at a level between B2 and C1.
There is no single pass mark. You earn TDN 3, 4 or 5 in each skill, and most universities ask for TDN 4 in all four skills. Some programmes set their own limits, so check the course page.
The certificate does not expire. Even so, check whether your university has its own rule about how recent your result must be.
The listed fee for the digital test is EUR 210. Fees depend on the country and the centre, so confirm the amount in your TestDaF portal before paying.
