The digital Master Test (dMAT exam) is a computer-based academic aptitude test that becomes a mandatory part of the APS certification process for Indian students applying to German Master’s programmes from summer semester 2027 onward. It applies only to applicants with an undergraduate degree in Engineering, Commerce/Accounting/Finance/Economics, or Business/Management, unless a transitional exemption applies. The test is developed by g.a.s.t. in cooperation with German universities, administered separately from APS document verification, and taken at designated test centres across India.

Key Facts at a Glance

  • What it is: A standardised, computer-based aptitude test with a core module and a subject module
  • Who needs it: Indian graduates in Engineering, Commerce/Accounting/Finance/Economics, or Business/Management applying for a German Master’s from summer semester 2027 onward, unless exempt
  • Who’s exempt: Bachelor’s applicants, PhD applicants, students in confirmed exchange/double-degree/partnership programmes, and anyone who registered APS online or shipped APS documents before 29 June 2026
  • Test fee: €150.00, payable to g.a.s.t. at registration
  • Duration: 3.5 hours, with a break between modules
  • Where it’s taken: g.a.s.t.-appointed test centres in India, Germany and Nepal
  • Who administers it: g.a.s.t. (Gesellschaft für Akademische Studienvorbereitung und Testentwicklung) administers dMAT; APS India remains separately responsible for document verification
  • Does a low score block your APS certificate? No. dMAT is not pass/fail; it’s a required additional document, not a gatekeeping score
  • Validity: The dMAT certificate does not expire
  • First India test date: 26 September 2026

If you’re mapping out your Master’s in Germany application for 2027 intake, the dMAT is now a document you’ll need alongside your APS certificate, so it’s worth checking your exemption status early.

What Is the dMAT?

The dMAT (digital Master Assessment Test) is an aptitude test for graduate-level applicants, built jointly by German universities, g.a.s.t., and originally supported by the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service). Starting in 2026, it is being added as a new, additional element of the APS documentation and verification process for Indian students applying to Master’s programmes in Germany. It is being rolled out in phases, covering selected applicant groups first, so both APS India and g.a.s.t. can implement the procedure in a structured way.

The dMAT is not a subject-knowledge exam in the way TestAS or GRE subject tests are. It measures general cognitive aptitude and the ability to apply reasoning to typical academic problems, rather than memorised facts. All questions are single-choice format, and the current India-relevant module is conducted in English.

Important distinction: the dMAT does not replace APS document verification, does not replace anabin degree recognition, and does not replace the admission decision of any German university. It sits alongside all three as one additional, required piece of documentation for applicants in the affected fields.

Who Needs to Take the dMAT?

During the 2026 introductory phase, the dMAT (General Academic Module) is required for applicants whose undergraduate degree falls under one of these fields, applying for summer semester 2027 or later:

Undergraduate FielddMAT Required?
EngineeringYes, unless exempt
Commerce, Accounting, Finance, EconomicsYes, unless exempt
Business / ManagementYes, unless exempt
All other fields (e.g. Science, Arts, Medicine)Not currently required

If your degree program sits between categories, for example Engineering Management, Business Analytics, Industrial Engineering, Data Science, or Financial Technology, classification is based strictly on APS India’s official Affected Fields List, not on self-assessment. Check your specific program against that list before assuming either way.

Who Is Exempt From the dMAT?

This is the part most applicants miss. You are not required to take the dMAT if any of the following apply:

  • You are applying for a Bachelor’s programme in Germany
  • You are a Bachelor’s student who hasn’t yet completed at least 5 semesters (3-year programme) or 7 semesters (4-year programme)
  • You are a PhD applicant
  • Your previous degree falls outside the three affected fields
  • You are participating in an officially confirmed exchange, double-degree, or university partnership programme (submit confirmation from your home institution, the German partner institution, or the programme coordinator, along with your group number, with your APS documentation)
  • You completed your APS online registration before 29 June 2026, even if you ship your physical documents after that date
  • You shipped your complete APS application documents before 29 June 2026, even if verification is still ongoing
  • You have already received your APS certificate for a completed procedure

If you fall under a fresh APS application submitted later, the rules in force at the time of that new application apply, not the rules that applied to an earlier, already-completed procedure.

dMAT Exam Pattern and Structure

The dMAT has two parts, taken back to back with a break in between:

1. Core Module Tests general study aptitude through three subtests covering general cognitive skills such as figure sequences, mathematical/logical reasoning, and pattern recognition (Latin squares).

2. Subject Module For Indian APS applicants, this is the General Academic Module, which tests the ability to apply cognitive and analytical skills to general academic problem-solving. Questions combine a typical academic problem with related follow-up questions, so the format rewards applied reasoning over rote learning.

Total exam duration is 3.5 hours, including the break between modules. Beyond the General Academic Module, g.a.s.t. also runs subject-specific dMAT modules (Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering) for specific programmes such as the MSc Battery Science and Technology in Engineering at RWTH Aachen, and a module for the Data Science MSc at Göttingen. These only apply if you’re applying directly to those programmes, separate from standard APS verification.

dMAT Fee and Registration

The dMAT test fee is €150.00, charged and collected by g.a.s.t. directly during registration, separate from any APS India fees. Refunds are available under certain conditions if you cannot attend; check the terms published on the dMAT registration page before booking. If you fall sick or face an issue on test day, contact g.a.s.t. support directly at kontakt@gast.de rather than APS India, since g.a.s.t. handles all registration, payment, scheduling, and technical support.

How the dMAT Certificate Fits Into Your APS Application

This sequencing trips a lot of applicants up, so it’s worth being precise:

  • If you’re required to take the dMAT, you can still submit your APS application documents before your dMAT certificate is ready. APS India can begin document verification and plausibility checks on your other documents in the meantime, which helps avoid delays against tight university deadlines.
  • However, APS India can only issue your final APS certificate after your dMAT certificate has been submitted and cross-checked against the results g.a.s.t. provides.
  • This early-submission option applies only to the dMAT certificate. All other required academic documents must be submitted per the standard APS checklist in your initial submission; you cannot add or update other qualification documents later alongside a delayed dMAT certificate.
  • Once issued, your dMAT result is reflected directly on your APS certificate.
  • A low dMAT score does not automatically trigger a refusal of your APS certificate. APS India’s core job is still verifying the authenticity and formal plausibility of your academic documents; the dMAT result travels alongside that verification as a separate, required data point, not a pass/fail gate.

dMAT and anabin: What It Does Not Replace

The dMAT certificate does not replace the formal recognition of your university or degree, and it does not replace an anabin check. If your previous institution is listed as H+/- or H- in anabin, or its status is unclear, a strong dMAT score cannot compensate for that. APS India strongly recommends checking your institution’s anabin status before registering for the dMAT and before submitting your APS application, since a good aptitude test result has no bearing on formal degree recognition.

Check your institution on anabin

How the dMAT Certificate Is Scored

Your dMAT certificate reports results on two scales:

  • Percentile rank: shows what percentage of all participants scored equal to or lower than you. A percentile rank of 70 means 70% of test-takers scored the same or lower, and 30% scored higher.
  • dMAT score: a converted score between 0 and 200, with 100 as the average, calculated separately for the core module and the subject module, then added for a total score.

Because dMAT is standardised, your scores are always benchmarked against every participant across all test centres and test dates, not just your own session. The certificate is issued digitally through the g.a.s.t. participant portal (the same login you receive when you register) and does not expire, so once you have it, it stays valid for future application cycles too.

German universities decide independently how to weigh dMAT results in admissions. A strong score doesn’t guarantee admission, and a weak one doesn’t automatically mean rejection; it’s one input among several the university considers. If you haven’t finalised your university and course shortlist yet, that’s a good place to start before locking in your dMAT test date.

dMAT 2026 Test Dates in India

MilestoneDate
Registration opens29 June 2026
Registration deadline15 September 2026
dMAT test date26 September 2026
Results and certificate issued12 October 2026

Registration, scheduling, payment, and certificate delivery are all handled through the g.a.s.t. participant portal, not through the university or through APS directly.

If you’re applying for the winter semester 2026/27 intake, note that the first dMAT certificates only become available on 12 October 2026, so the requirement is effectively aimed at summer semester 2027 and later intakes.

dMAT Test Centres

The dMAT is currently offered at g.a.s.t.-appointed centres in:

India: Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Kolkata, Mananthavady, Mumbai, New Delhi, Pune (final list confirmed at registration; seats are first come, first served)

Germany: Berlin

Nepal: Kathmandu

If your preferred centre is fully booked, you’ll need to pick another available location; neither APS India nor g.a.s.t. can reserve seats outside the standard booking flow. If you’re based in Delhi NCR, our Germany education consultants in Delhi and Germany education consultants in Gurgaon can help you plan test centre booking alongside the rest of your application timeline.

How to Prepare for the dMAT

Official preparatory material is published by g.a.s.t. for each module, including sample tasks, worked solutions, and short walkthrough videos covering the exam interface for figure sequences, mathematical equations, Latin squares, and the subject module screen format. Since no additional instructions are shown once the test begins, going through this material beforehand is necessary to understand the on-screen test format itself, not just the content.

Because the dMAT tests applied reasoning rather than memorised content, generic aptitude practice (numerical reasoning, logical sequences, pattern recognition) is useful groundwork, but the official g.a.s.t. sample sets remain the most accurate representation of question style and difficulty.

If your German language proficiency or other admission exams like TestAS or TestDaF are also on your to-do list, sequence your prep so these don’t clash with your dMAT test date.

Which Universities Currently Use the dMAT?

As of 2026, two German universities use dMAT results as a selection criterion:

  • RWTH Aachen University — for the MSc Battery Science and Technology in Engineering
  • Georg-August-Universität Göttingen — for the MSc Data Science

Beyond these programme-specific uses, dMAT’s broader significance for Indian applicants is its role inside the APS verification process itself, which affects anyone applying to a German Master’s in the eligible fields from 2027 intake onward, regardless of which university they’re targeting.

dMAT and Your Broader Germany Application Checklist

The dMAT doesn’t replace any other part of your Germany application; it sits alongside it. Depending on your profile, your checklist will likely also include:

Bachelor’s applicants are exempt from dMAT, but if you’re earlier in your journey, our Bachelor’s in Germany and Studienkolleg guides cover that track separately.

What is the dMAT exam?

The dMAT (digital Master Test) is a standardised aptitude test developed by g.a.s.t. and German universities. From 2026, it is a required part of the APS documentation and verification process for Indian graduates applying to German Master’s programmes in certain fields.

Is the dMAT compulsory for APS certification?

It’s compulsory only for applicants whose undergraduate degree is in Engineering, Commerce/Accounting/Finance/Economics, or Business/Management, applying to begin their German Master’s in summer semester 2027 or later, unless they qualify for an exemption.

Who is exempt from the dMAT?

Bachelor’s applicants, PhD applicants, students in confirmed exchange or double-degree programmes, applicants outside the three affected fields, and anyone who registered APS online or shipped their APS documents before 29 June 2026, or who already holds a completed APS certificate.

How much does the dMAT cost?

The dMAT fee is €150.00, paid to g.a.s.t. directly during registration.

Can I submit my APS application before my dMAT certificate is ready?

Yes. You can submit your APS documents first, and APS India can begin verifying them, but your final APS certificate can only be issued once your dMAT certificate is submitted and checked against g.a.s.t.’s results.

Does a low dMAT score mean my APS certificate will be refused?

No. The dMAT is not pass/fail. A low score does not automatically lead to refusal; it is a required additional document alongside the standard APS document verification.

Does the dMAT replace anabin or degree recognition checks?

No. The dMAT certificate does not replace anabin or formal recognition of your university or degree. Applicants should check their institution’s anabin status separately before registering for the dMAT.

How long is the dMAT exam?

The total exam duration is 3.5 hours, including a break between the core module and the subject module.

Where can I take the dMAT in India?

dMAT is available at g.a.s.t. test centres in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Kolkata, Mananthavady, Mumbai, New Delhi, and Pune, with additional centres in Berlin (Germany) and Kathmandu (Nepal).

Does the dMAT certificate expire?

No, the dMAT certificate is valid indefinitely once issued.

How is the dMAT scored?

Results are reported as a percentile rank (compared to all other test-takers) and a dMAT score from 0 to 200 (average 100), calculated for the core module and subject module separately, then combined into a total score.

Who administers dMAT registration and results?

g.a.s.t. (Gesellschaft für Akademische Studienvorbereitung und Testentwicklung) handles registration, test centre booking, technical support, and certificate issuance, through their participant portal. APS India remains separately responsible for document verification.

When is the first dMAT test date in India?

The first India administration is scheduled for 26 September 2026, with registration open from 29 June 2026 to 15 September 2026, and results issued 12 October 2026.
