The TOEFL exam (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is a computer-based English proficiency test that measures your reading, listening, speaking and writing skills for study abroad, work and immigration purposes. It is owned and administered by ETS and accepted by more than 13,000 institutions across the USA, Canada, the UK, Australia and 160 plus countries. From 21 January 2026, ETS rolled out a shorter, adaptive TOEFL iBT with a new scoring scale, so the test most students sit today looks noticeably different from the version described in older guides. This guide explains the current TOEFL exam pattern, TOEFL syllabus, fees, registration, scoring and TOEFL preparation in plain terms, so you can plan your test with confidence.

1.0 to 6.0 New TOEFL band score scale
~90 minutes Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing
2 years TOEFL score validity

What Is the TOEFL Exam?

The TOEFL exam is a standardised English test built around academic, real-world English use, so universities can judge whether an applicant is ready to follow lectures, write assignments and take part in classroom discussion in English. It is one of the oldest and most widely recognised English tests among study abroad students, especially for applications to the United States.

There is no pass or fail in the TOEFL exam. You receive a score for each of the four skills and one overall score, and every university or visa authority sets its own required number. That is why the first step in any TOEFL preparation plan is to check the score your target course actually needs. Our exam preparation page explains how we help students plan this step alongside their university shortlist.

The New TOEFL iBT Format (From January 2026)

ETS shortened and redesigned the TOEFL iBT starting 21 January 2026. Reading and Listening are now multistage adaptive, meaning question difficulty adjusts based on how you are performing, which trims total test time while keeping the assessment just as thorough. Anyone booking a TOEFL exam today sits this new format, so make sure your TOEFL preparation material reflects it rather than the older, longer version.

Feature New TOEFL iBT (from Jan 2026) Old TOEFL iBT (before Jan 2026)
Total test time About 90 minutes About 2 hours
Reading and Listening Adaptive, question difficulty adjusts to your performance Fixed difficulty for every test-taker
Score scale 1.0 to 6.0 band score, CEFR-aligned 0 to 120 total score
Score comparability Comparable 0 to 120 score also shown during the transition period Not applicable

Because universities are still adjusting their published cutoffs, ETS reports both the new 1.0 to 6.0 band score and a comparable score on the familiar 0 to 120 scale through the 2026 to 2028 transition window. Until your target universities update their websites to the new scale, it is worth checking both numbers.

TOEFL Exam Pattern and Syllabus

The TOEFL syllabus still covers the same four skills as before, Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing, just delivered in a shorter, adaptive format. There is no negative marking anywhere in the TOEFL exam.

Section Approx. Duration Format
Reading 18 to 30 minutes Adaptive passages, from daily-life texts to academic material
Listening 18 to 30 minutes Adaptive conversations, announcements and academic lectures
Speaking About 8 minutes 4 tasks built around real-world communication scenarios
Writing About 23 minutes 2 tasks, including an integrated and an independent writing task

Reading in the TOEFL syllabus now blends short daily-life texts with academic passages, and the adaptive design means stronger early answers lead to more challenging follow-up questions. Listening covers conversations and lectures in an academic setting, testing how well you follow spoken English at natural speed. Speaking has moved toward more realistic, real-world communication tasks rather than purely academic prompts, and Writing still combines an integrated task, where you respond to a reading and a lecture, with an independent task where you argue a position.

How Is the TOEFL Score Calculated?

Each of the four skills, Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing, is now scored on a scale of 1.0 to 6.0, in 0.5 increments, aligned to the CEFR framework used across Europe. Your overall TOEFL score is the average of the four section scores, rounded to the nearest 0.5, and ETS also provides a comparable score on the older 0 to 120 scale during the transition period.

  • 4.5 and above (broadly comparable to 90 plus on the old scale): considered a strong TOEFL score for most competitive master's and undergraduate programmes.
  • 3.5 to 4.5 (broadly comparable to 70 to 90): a solid, widely accepted TOEFL score for a large number of universities.
  • Below 3.5 (broadly comparable to under 70): can still work for many programmes, especially when the rest of your academic profile is strong.

Scoring is done through a centralised network rather than a single examiner, which helps reduce rater bias. A TOEFL score stays valid for 2 years, and most candidates receive their official results within about 72 hours of the test.

What TOEFL Score Do You Need?

The TOEFL score you need depends on your course, university and destination country. The ranges below reflect the familiar 0 to 120 scale, since most university websites are still using it during the transition period, alongside the equivalent new band score.

Goal Typical TOEFL Score (0-120 scale) Notes
Bachelor's degree abroad 80 to 90 Some courses ask for a minimum score in each section too
Master's degree 90 to 100 Business, law and engineering programmes often sit at the higher end
PhD programmes 95 to 105 Departments with heavy teaching or research assistant duties may ask for more
Top-ranked US universities 100 and above Ivy League and similarly selective schools often expect this range

Since the TOEFL exam is especially popular for US-bound applications, our USA destination page explains where it typically fits into admissions there. For Canada, the UK and Australia, universities also widely accept the TOEFL exam, and our Canada and Australia destination pages cover typical requirements for each.

TOEFL Exam Fee, Registration and Test Dates

The TOEFL exam fee in India is around $205, or approximately ₹16,900. Fees are set by ETS in US dollars and can change, so always check the current amount on the official ETS website before you pay. Registration is done entirely online through your ETS account.

  1. Create your ETS account with your personal details, exactly as they appear on your passport.
  2. Choose your delivery mode, a test centre appointment or the TOEFL iBT Home Edition.
  3. Select a test date and slot, since the TOEFL exam is offered more than 170 times a year at Indian test centres.
  4. Add your free score recipients. You can send scores to up to four institutions at no extra cost during registration.
  5. Pay the TOEFL exam fee by credit or debit card, and save your confirmation email.
  6. Prepare for test day. Carry your original passport, and note that Indian students under 15 need parental consent to register.

Because the TOEFL exam is offered so frequently, you often have more flexibility on dates than with other English tests, though popular slots close to university deadlines still fill up fast. If you need to retake the test, note that ETS requires a minimum 3-day gap between attempts. If your timeline is tight, our services team can help you plan your application around your TOEFL test date.

Test Centre vs TOEFL iBT Home Edition

The TOEFL exam can be taken at an authorised test centre or from home through the TOEFL iBT Home Edition, and both formats carry the same content, timing and scoring, with universities treating the results identically. At a test centre, you work on a proctored computer in a controlled room. With the Home Edition, a remote proctor monitors you through your webcam for the entire session, and you need a quiet, private room, a working webcam and stable internet.

Choose the format that removes the most stress from your test day. If you do not have a distraction-free room at home, a test centre may work better for you. If travel to a centre is inconvenient, the Home Edition is a solid, equally accepted alternative. Either way, take at least one full-length timed mock test in your chosen format before the actual TOEFL exam.

How to Prepare for the TOEFL Exam

Most students need 6 to 10 weeks of steady TOEFL preparation, depending on their starting level and target score. Start with a full mock test to establish your baseline, then focus on your weakest section, since a low score anywhere pulls down your overall TOEFL score.

  • Reading: practise both everyday and academic passages, since the new adaptive format blends the two, and work on identifying main ideas quickly.
  • Listening: get comfortable with natural academic speech, note-taking while you listen, and following longer lecture-style audio.
  • Speaking: practise responding naturally to real-world prompts rather than memorising scripted answers, since the redesigned tasks reward genuine communication.
  • Writing: practise both the integrated task, where you combine a reading and a lecture, and the independent task, where you build and support your own argument within the time limit.

Official ETS TOEFL practice material, updated for the January 2026 format, is the closest match to the real TOEFL exam, so use it for your final mock rounds. If you prefer guided support, structured TOEFL coaching with regular speaking and writing feedback can help you close specific score gaps faster. Our exam preparation courses include mock tests and personal feedback so you can track your TOEFL score improvement week by week.

TOEFL vs IELTS vs PTE vs Duolingo

The TOEFL exam is not the only English proficiency option. Many universities accept several tests, though visa authorities can be stricter about which ones they recognise. Always check the accepted tests for both your course and your visa before choosing.

Test Score Scale Speaking Format Best For
TOEFL iBT 1.0 to 6.0 band, with a comparable 0 to 120 score Recorded on a computer US-bound applications and academically focused programmes
IELTS Bands 0 to 9 Face-to-face with an examiner Universities and immigration in many countries
PTE Academic 10 to 90 Recorded on a computer Fast results and fully computer-based, integrated testing
Duolingo English Test 10 to 160 Recorded at home on a computer Universities that accept it, but rarely for visas

Students applying heavily to US universities, or comfortable with reading and typed responses over a face-to-face interview, often find the TOEFL exam a natural fit.

Common Mistakes in the TOEFL Exam

  • Preparing with material written before January 2026, which does not reflect the current adaptive format or new scoring scale.
  • Confusing the 1.0 to 6.0 band score with the old 0 to 120 score when checking a university's published cutoff.
  • Memorising scripted Speaking answers instead of practising natural, real-world communication as the redesigned tasks now expect.
  • Ignoring the integrated Writing task, which many students find harder than the independent essay.
  • Booking the retake too soon, without leaving the required 3-day gap between TOEFL exam attempts.
  • Booking the test too close to a university deadline, leaving no room for a retake.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good TOEFL score?

On the new 1.0 to 6.0 scale, a score of 4.5 or above is considered strong, broadly comparable to 90 or higher on the older 0 to 120 scale. A score in the 3.5 to 4.5 band, comparable to 70 to 90, remains widely accepted by many universities.

How long is a TOEFL score valid?

Most universities and immigration authorities accept a TOEFL result for 2 years from the test date. Some institutions have their own rules, so check before you apply.

How many times can I take the TOEFL exam?

There is no overall limit. You can retake the TOEFL exam as often as you like, as long as you leave a minimum 3-day gap between attempts and pay the fee each time.

What changed in the TOEFL exam in 2026?

From 21 January 2026, ETS shortened the TOEFL iBT to about 90 minutes, made Reading and Listening adaptive, and moved to a new 1.0 to 6.0 band score, while also reporting a comparable 0 to 120 score during a transition period through 2028.

How long does it take to get TOEFL results?

Most candidates receive their official TOEFL iBT results within about 72 hours of the test, one of the faster turnaround times among major English tests.

Is the TOEFL exam hard?

It depends on your current English level and comfort typing responses under timed, adaptive conditions. Most students find the integrated Writing task and academic Listening passages the most demanding, but steady TOEFL preparation with timed mock tests improves scores in a few weeks.

Can I study abroad without the TOEFL exam?

Yes. Universities usually accept alternatives such as IELTS, PTE or Duolingo, and some accept a medium of instruction certificate instead. The visa authority may still ask for a specific test, so check both requirements. Our services team can help you plan around test and cost preferences.
