Studying in Italy means enrolling in a public or private Italian university, usually at a lower cost than the UK, USA or Australia, and often in an English-taught programme. Public tuition generally falls between EUR 900 and EUR 4,000 a year, depending on your family income and the university, and Indian students apply through the Universitaly portal before getting a type D student visa. This guide covers study in Italy for Indian students: universities in Italy, the cost of studying in Italy, admission rules, the Italy student visa, scholarships, work rights and stay-back options, so you can plan your application step by step.

EUR 900 to 4,000 Typical public tuition per year
500+ English-taught programmes
Up to 12 months Job-search permit after graduation

Why Study in Italy for Indian Students?

Italy combines old, respected universities with fees that are much lower than in most English-speaking countries. Bologna, founded in 1088, is often called the oldest university in the Western world, and technical universities such as Politecnico di Milano and Politecnico di Torino are known for engineering, architecture and design. Italy also sits inside the Schengen area, so travel to other European countries is easy.

For an Indian applicant, three things stand out. Tuition at public universities depends on family income through a system called ISEE, so many students pay far less than the headline figure. Regional scholarships (DSU) can cover fees and living costs for eligible students. And a large number of master's programmes are taught fully in English, so you do not need to speak Italian to be admitted, although learning it makes daily life much easier.

Top Universities in Italy for International Students

There are close to a hundred universities in Italy, and the best choice depends on your subject, budget and city. These are the names Indian students shortlist most often.

University City Type Often chosen for
University of Bologna Bologna Public Wide choice of bachelor's and master's programmes
Politecnico di Milano Milan Public Engineering, architecture and design
Politecnico di Torino Turin Public Engineering and architecture
Sapienza University of Rome Rome Public A very large range of subjects
University of Pisa Pisa Public Lower tuition and strong sciences
Bocconi University Milan Private Business, economics and finance, at higher fees

Check each course page on the university website and on Universitaly, because English-taught options, deadlines and tuition change every year.

Cost of Studying in Italy

The cost of studying in Italy has two parts: tuition and living expenses. Public tuition is income-based, and private universities set their own market rates.

Expense Approximate amount Notes
Public university tuition EUR 900 to EUR 4,000 per year Depends on the university and your ISEE income bracket
Private university tuition From about EUR 5,000 to EUR 20,000 per year Varies widely by university and programme
Living costs Roughly EUR 700 to EUR 1,100 per month Milan and Rome sit at the top of the range
Visa proof of funds About EUR 6,000 to EUR 7,000 per year Set by Italian authorities and reviewed regularly
Student visa fee Around EUR 50 Confirm the current fee at VFS or the consulate

ISEE is the document that shows your family's economic situation. Non-residents can apply for a version called ISEE Parificato, which lets you access the same fee brackets as Italian students. Students from low-income families may pay very little. DSU scholarships, given by Italian regions, are needs-based and can also cover housing and meals, so apply early and read the criteria of your region.

Eligibility and Admission Requirements

Requirements differ by university and course, but these basics apply to most applicants.

  • Academic background: a bachelor's programme needs 12 years of schooling, which Class 12 gives you. A master's programme needs a bachelor's degree, usually with 15 years of total education. Your degree must be in a field related to the master's you choose.
  • English or Italian proof: English-taught programmes usually ask for IELTS, TOEFL or a similar test. Each university sets its own minimum score, so read the course page. Our exam preparation page explains how we coach IELTS.
  • Entrance tests: some programmes, such as medicine in English and many bachelor's degrees, use their own tests, for example IMAT or TOLC. Book these early, because dates are limited.
  • Documents: transcripts, degree certificates, a motivation letter, a CV and sometimes recommendation letters. Your embassy or university may ask for legalised or apostilled copies and a declaration of value or comparability statement.

How to Apply to Study in Italy: Step by Step

The process has more steps than applying to a country with a single portal, so start early.

  1. Shortlist courses. Search Universitaly and each university website by subject, city and teaching language.
  2. Apply to the university. Most universities run their own online application, with their own deadlines and fees.
  3. Receive your admission or eligibility letter. Some universities issue it before you pre-enrol, so keep it safe.
  4. Pre-enrol on Universitaly. Non-EU applicants living abroad must pre-enrol here. The window for courses starting in September or October is usually in the first months of the year, so check the dates for your intake.
  5. Apply for your type D student visa. You submit your papers through the visa channel for your city, and applicants in Delhi usually go through VFS Global.
  6. Arrive and complete your enrolment. Get your tax code (codice fiscale) in the first week, and enrol in person at your university.
  7. Apply for your residence permit. Non-EU students must apply for a permesso di soggiorno within 8 working days of arrival.

Italy Intakes and Application Deadlines

Most programmes start in September or October, and a smaller number start in February or March. Deadlines vary a lot. Some competitive courses close their first rounds many months before the start date, while others keep a second round open. Because visa appointments and document legalisation take time, aim to begin your Italy application at least eight to ten months before your intended start.

Italy Student Visa for Indian Students

Students staying longer than 90 days need a national type D visa. Approval depends on how complete and consistent your file is. A typical checklist looks like this.

  • Valid passport with blank pages and enough validity beyond your course end date.
  • University admission letter and Universitaly pre-enrolment proof.
  • Proof of funds, usually six months of bank statements, a sanctioned education loan or a scholarship letter. Amounts are reviewed regularly, so check the current figure before you apply.
  • Health insurance that meets the consulate's rules.
  • Proof of accommodation, such as a dormitory letter or rental contract.
  • Academic documents, legalised or apostilled as required, and your language test score.
  • A short statement explaining your study plan and why you chose your course.

Clear source of funds matters. If a parent is sponsoring you, keep income tax returns and supporting papers ready, and make sure any education loan is visible in your bank records.

Work Rights and Stay-Back Options

On a student residence permit, you can generally work up to 20 hours a week, with an annual limit of 1,040 hours. Part-time work can help with daily costs, but it should not be your main source of funds for the visa.

After graduation, non-EU students who finish a recognised Italian degree can apply for a residence permit for job search or self-employment. It is commonly described as lasting up to 12 months, and you must apply before your student permit expires. Guides quote different funds and document rules for this permit, so confirm the current requirements with the immigration office before you plan around it.

Do You Need to Learn Italian?

Not for admission to an English-taught course. Still, Italian helps with rent, shops, offices, part-time jobs and friendships, and it raises your chances of finding work after your degree. Some Italian-taught programmes ask for a B2 certificate, so check the language line on every course page. Our Italian language classes cover the levels you need, online or through our Delhi team, and if you want help fitting them around your application dates, our services team can plan the timeline with you.

Italy vs Germany: Which Is Better for Indian Students?

Many applicants compare these two countries. Both have low-cost public education and a route to work after graduation, but the systems differ.

Feature Italy Germany
Public tuition Income-based, roughly EUR 900 to EUR 4,000 a year Low or zero at most public universities
English-taught options 500+ programmes, mostly at master's level Hundreds of English programmes at bachelor's and master's level
Application route University application, then Universitaly University application, then visa
Stay-back after graduation Up to about 12 months Up to 18 months
Scholarships Regional DSU and university awards DAAD and university awards

If Germany is also on your list, read our Masters in Germany guide and Bachelors in Germany guide to compare costs, language rules and timelines side by side.

Common Mistakes When Applying to Study in Italy

  • Skipping Universitaly pre-enrolment, which most non-EU applicants need before the visa.
  • Missing the university's own deadline while waiting for a visa date.
  • Ignoring the ISEE Parificato, and paying a higher fee bracket than necessary.
  • Showing funds without a clear source, or with an education loan that has not yet been disbursed.
  • Waiting longer than 8 working days to apply for the residence permit after arrival.
  • Choosing a private university without comparing the fee to a public option of similar quality.
