Studying in Lithuania means earning an EU degree in a small, safe Baltic country where tuition and living costs are lower than in most of Western Europe. Bachelor's tuition starts from about EUR 1,300 a year and master's from about EUR 2,300, many programmes are taught in English, and graduates can apply for a residence permit of up to 12 months to look for work. This guide covers study in Lithuania for Indian students: universities in Lithuania, the cost of studying in Lithuania, eligibility, intakes, the student visa and residence permit, work rules and stay-back options, so you can plan your application with clear numbers.

From EUR 1,300 Bachelor's tuition per year
EUR 500 to 800 Living costs per month
12 months Job-search permit after study

Why Study in Lithuania for Indian Students?

Lithuania is a member of the European Union and the Schengen area, so a Lithuanian degree is an EU qualification and your residence permit lets you travel to other Schengen countries for short stays. The country has a fast-growing technology and business sector, and Vilnius, the capital, is popular with international students because of its start-up scene, student housing and English-friendly services.

Cost is the main reason Indian applicants shortlist it. Tuition is lower than in the UK, Ireland or the Netherlands, and monthly living costs are among the lowest in the EU. Lithuania also offers programmes in engineering, IT, business, law, design and health sciences taught in English, so you do not need Lithuanian to be admitted. If you are still comparing countries, read this page alongside our Masters in Germany guide and Bachelors in Germany guide.

Top Universities in Lithuania for International Students

Lithuania has a compact system of universities and colleges. These are the ones Indian students research most often.

University City Often chosen for
Vilnius University Vilnius Sciences, humanities, law, business and IT
Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) Kaunas Engineering, technology and business
Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VILNIUS TECH) Vilnius Civil engineering, architecture and transport
Vytautas Magnus University Kaunas Social sciences, humanities and liberal arts
Mykolas Romeris University Vilnius Law and public management
Lithuanian University of Health Sciences Kaunas Medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and veterinary studies
ISM University of Management and Economics Vilnius Business, economics and finance

Recognition, English-taught options and tuition change from year to year, so check each course page and confirm that your programme is accredited before you pay any deposit.

Cost of Studying in Lithuania

Your budget has two parts: tuition and living expenses. Costs differ by city, and Vilnius is usually the most expensive.

Expense Approximate amount Notes
Bachelor's tuition From about EUR 1,300, often EUR 2,000 to EUR 5,000 per year Depends on the university and subject
Master's tuition From about EUR 2,300, often up to EUR 8,000 per year Business and technical courses tend to cost more
Medicine and health sciences Considerably higher, often above EUR 10,000 per year Check the university's fee list
Living costs About EUR 500 to EUR 800 per month Includes rent, food, transport and study materials
Student housing Roughly EUR 90 to EUR 400 per month Dormitories cost less than private rentals
National D visa Around EUR 120 Confirm the current fee before you pay

Many universities offer partial tuition discounts or merit awards. Ask the admissions office about scholarships when you apply, since these are decided by each university and deadlines are often early.

Eligibility and Admission Requirements

Each university sets its own rules, but these points apply to most applicants.

  • Bachelor's programmes: you need a Class 12 certificate, and some courses ask for specific subjects such as mathematics or physics.
  • Master's programmes: you need a bachelor's degree in a related field, with a minimum grade set by the university.
  • English proof: English-taught courses usually ask for IELTS, TOEFL or an accepted alternative. The required score differs by university and course. Our exam preparation page explains how we coach IELTS.
  • Documents: transcripts, degree certificate, passport, motivation letter and CV. Some courses also ask for recommendation letters or an interview.

How to Apply to Study in Lithuania: Step by Step

  1. Shortlist programmes. Compare courses by subject, city, tuition and teaching language on official university pages.
  2. Apply online. Most universities take applications through their own portal, with their own fee and deadline.
  3. Accept your offer. Sign the study agreement and pay the deposit or first instalment if the university asks for it.
  4. Arrange funds, insurance and housing. You will need these for the visa file.
  5. Apply for the national D visa. Use the Lithuanian mission's channel for India, and book the appointment early.
  6. Arrive and apply for the residence permit. Students staying more than a year normally apply for a temporary residence permit after arrival.
  7. Register and enrol. Complete your university formalities and keep your permit valid for the whole course.

Lithuania Intakes and Deadlines

The main intake starts in September, and some universities offer a smaller intake in February. Many September deadlines fall around the end of June, but dates differ by university and by course, and popular programmes can close earlier. Plan to begin your Lithuania application at least six months before your start date, because visa appointments, document preparation and insurance take time.

Lithuania Student Visa and Residence Permit

Indian students who study for longer than 90 days need a national type D visa to enter and then a temporary residence permit to stay. A typical file includes the following.

  • Passport with enough validity and blank pages.
  • University admission or acceptance letter.
  • Proof of funds. Guides quote a monthly minimum somewhere between about EUR 350 and EUR 500, and the requirement is updated, so confirm the exact figure with the mission.
  • Health insurance that meets the stated minimum coverage, commonly quoted at EUR 30,000.
  • Proof of accommodation, such as a dormitory confirmation or rental contract.
  • Academic documents, a clear study plan and passport photographs.

A clear, consistent file matters more than a large one. Explain why you chose your course and university, show where your money comes from and make sure names and dates match across all documents.

Work Rights and Stay-Back Options

With a valid residence permit, international students can work while they study, and no separate work permit is needed. The hour limits have been changing, though. One Lithuanian university states that from 22 May 2026, first- and second-year bachelor's students on employment contracts are limited to 20 hours a week, and later-year students can work up to 40 hours. Other official pages describe different limits, so ask your own university for the current rule and do not plan your visa funds around job income.

After you graduate, you can apply for a temporary residence permit of up to 12 months for job search or self-employment. You must apply while your student permit is still valid, and you will need to show funds, insurance and housing. From there, you can switch to a work permit if you find a qualifying job.

Lithuania vs Germany: Which Is Better for Indian Students?

Both countries are in the EU and offer English-taught degrees, but they suit different budgets and plans.

Feature Lithuania Germany
Tuition Charged, from about EUR 1,300 a year at bachelor's level Low or zero at most public universities
Living costs About EUR 500 to EUR 800 a month Higher in most cities
Admission Often flexible, with several intakes More competitive at public universities
Stay-back after graduation Up to 12 months Up to 18 months
Language English is enough for many courses German helps a lot, and is needed for many programmes

Choose Lithuania if you want a lower living cost and simpler admission. Choose Germany if zero-tuition public universities and a larger job market matter more, and you can invest time in German.

Common Mistakes When Applying to Study in Lithuania

  • Paying a deposit before checking that the programme is accredited.
  • Assuming part-time work will cover your living costs and visa funds.
  • Applying late for the visa and missing the start date of the course.
  • Using insurance that does not match the coverage the mission asks for.
  • Submitting documents with mismatched names, dates or course details.
  • Choosing a course only because it is cheap, without checking career outcomes.
