The TestAS exam (Test for Academic Studies) is a standardised aptitude test for international students who want to apply for a bachelor's degree at a German university. It does not test your English or your German. It tests how you think: spotting patterns, solving logic puzzles, handling basic maths and reasoning inside a subject area you plan to study. A strong TestAS score can lift your application, and some German universities ask for it as a requirement. This guide explains the TestAS exam pattern, TestAS syllabus, TestAS exam fee, registration, scoring and TestAS preparation in plain language, so you can decide whether you need it and how to get ready.
TestAS stands for Test for Academic Studies. It is run by g.a.s.t., the same organisation that runs TestDaF, and it is offered in German and English. You pick one language and take the whole test in it. The TestAS exam has two parts, a Core Module and a Subject Module, and you take both together in the same sitting.
There is no pass or fail in the TestAS exam. You receive scores, and each university decides what to do with them. Some German universities make the TestAS certificate compulsory for certain courses, some use it to rank applicants, and some do not ask for it at all. That is why the smartest first step is to open your target university's admission page and check what it says about TestAS before you book anything.
It also helps to be clear about what the TestAS exam is not. It is not a language test, so it does not replace a German or English certificate. It does not measure personality or motivation either. It is a test of academic aptitude, which is why two students with the same school marks can walk out with very different results.
The TestAS exam is built for school leavers who want to start an undergraduate programme in Germany. For students in India, the official TestAS website says the test can play a role in the application process if a German university requires it. In other words, it is not a blanket rule for every Indian applicant. It depends on the university and the course you choose.
If you are still comparing options, our page on bachelor's programmes in Germany shows how admission works at public universities, and our Studienkolleg guide explains the preparatory route for students whose school qualification is not accepted for direct entry.
A quick note for master's applicants. The TestAS exam is meant for bachelor's applicants. Master's students from India may face a separate aptitude requirement through the APS process, which was introduced in mid-2026 for selected fields, so check the latest APS notice and see our Masters in Germany page before you plan your timeline.
Here is the TestAS exam pattern for the digital version, which is the format most candidates now sit. The Core Module comes first, followed by a 30-minute break outside the exam room, and then the Subject Module.
| Part | Duration | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Core Module | About 90 minutes | Three subtests of 25 minutes each, with 20 items per subtest |
| Break | 30 minutes | Rest outside the exam room |
| Subject Module | 90 minutes | 10 to 15 testlets, each with 4 to 8 questions |
Most answers are single choice, where you click one option on the screen. The exception is the Mathematical Equations subtest, where you work out the values yourself. Inside the Core Module you also get two short breaks of about two minutes at your desk. Add check-in time and the instructions, and you should plan for roughly three and a half hours at the centre.
The TestAS syllabus does not work like a school syllabus. There are no chapters to memorise. Instead, the test checks reasoning skills and how well you can read and apply information from texts, tables, graphs and formulas. Once you understand the task types, TestAS preparation becomes much more focused.
You choose one Subject Module based on the course you want to study. Each task, called a testlet, describes a topic with a mix of text, graphics and tables, and then asks questions that check whether you understood the idea and can apply it. You do not need to know technical vocabulary in advance, since the test is about reasoning with the material in front of you.
| Subject Module | Typical topics | Best for applicants to |
|---|---|---|
| Humanities, Cultural Studies and Social Sciences | Philosophy, history, linguistics, literary studies, political science, sociology | Arts, languages, social science and politics courses |
| Engineering | Mathematics, physics, chemistry, mechanics, thermodynamics, electrical engineering, computer science | Mechanical, electrical, civil and related engineering courses |
| Mathematics, Computer Science and Natural Sciences | Mathematics, computer science, chemistry, physics, earth sciences, scientific work | Maths, IT, physics, chemistry and geoscience courses |
| Economics | Business administration, economics, statistics, law, information technology | Business, management and economics courses |
| Life Sciences | Biology, biochemistry, physics, computer science, psychology, statistics | Biology, biotechnology and related courses |
| Medicine | Anatomy, physiology, biology, biochemistry, psychology, physics | Medicine and health-related courses |
Choose the module that matches your target course, and confirm on the university website whether it names a specific module. Picking the wrong one is one of the easiest ways to waste the exam fee.
The TestAS exam comes in a digital version taken on a computer at a licensed test centre, and a paper-based version. Results from the two versions can be compared using an official conversion table. The practical differences are timing and module choice.
Because results take weeks, work backwards from your university deadline. If an application closes in mid-January, an exam in late November leaves very little room for a second attempt.
The digital TestAS reports your result on two scales. The first is the TestAS score, from 0 to 200, calculated separately for the whole Core Module and the whole Subject Module. The second is the percentile rank, from 1 to 100, which shows how you performed compared with other test takers. An overall score from 0 to 400 is also shown.
There is no official minimum TestAS score that works for every university. Some universities set their own cutoff, and others use the result only to compare applicants or to check that your school marks and your aptitude look consistent. A higher percentile is always better, but always read the specific rule for your course before you set a personal target. Universities and uni-assist can also verify your certificate directly with g.a.s.t.
The TestAS exam fee is usually between €150 and €160, which comes to roughly ₹15,000 to ₹17,000 depending on the exchange rate. The amount can differ by test centre and can change, so treat these numbers as a guide and confirm the exact fee on the official TestAS website when you book. Sittings are spread through the year, and one listed date is 26 November 2026, so check the current calendar for the slot that suits your application deadline.

Book Free Counselling →Most students do well with four to eight weeks of steady TestAS preparation, though that depends on how comfortable you already are with puzzles and timed maths. Start by trying the official sample material to see where you stand, then spend extra time on whichever subtest feels slowest.
Use the official preparation material and the demo in the test taker portal for your final rounds, since they match the real task types. If you also need a German certificate for your course, plan that in parallel. Our guides on the time it takes to learn German in India and the German language course in Delhi will help you fit language classes and TestAS practice into the same study calendar.
Students often mix these up because they all appear in German university guides. They serve different purposes, and many applicants need more than one. You can read more about English tests on our exam preparation page.
| Test | What it measures | When you need it |
|---|---|---|
| TestAS | Academic aptitude and reasoning | Bachelor's applications where the university requires or values it |
| TestDaF or Goethe certificate | German language level | German-taught programmes and most visa cases for those courses |
| IELTS or TOEFL | English language level | English-taught programmes |
In short, TestAS shows that you can handle academic work, while a language test shows that you can follow classes. A complete application to a German university often needs both a proof of language and, where asked, a TestAS certificate.
The TestAS exam, or Test for Academic Studies, is a standardised aptitude test for international applicants to bachelor's programmes at German universities. It has a Core Module and a Subject Module and is available in German and English.
Not for everyone. The official TestAS website says it can be relevant for applicants from India if a German university requires it. Check the admission page of your target course to see whether it is mandatory, optional or not used.
The fee is generally between €150 and €160, roughly ₹15,000 to ₹17,000, depending on the test centre and the exchange rate. Always confirm the current amount on the official TestAS website before paying.
There is no single number that counts as good for every university. The digital test reports a TestAS score from 0 to 200 per module and a percentile rank from 1 to 100. A higher percentile helps, but each university sets its own use of the result.
Digital TestAS results take about three weeks and paper-based results about four weeks. Nothing is released before the result date listed for your sitting, so plan around your university deadline.
Choose the module that matches your course, such as Engineering for engineering degrees or Economics for business degrees. Pick the language you reason best in, unless the university requires a specific one. You must use the same language for every part of the test.
You can sit the test again by booking a new date and paying the fee again. Check whether your university looks at your best result or your latest one, and leave enough time before the deadline for results to arrive.
No. TestAS measures aptitude, not language. You will still need an accepted English or German language certificate for your course. Our services team can help you match the right tests to your shortlist.
