The TestDaF exam (Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache) is a standardised German language test that proves you can study at a German university. It is run by the TestDaF-Institut in Bochum, it is recognised by German universities, and the certificate does not expire. You are scored from TDN 3 to TDN 5 in each of four skills, and most universities want TDN 4 in every one. This guide explains the TestDaF exam pattern, TestDaF syllabus, TestDaF score rules, TestDaF exam fee, registration in India and TestDaF preparation, so you can decide if this is the right test for your Germany plan.

TDN 3 to 5 Score levels per skill
3 h 10 min Digital exam duration
No expiry Certificate validity

What Is the TestDaF Exam?

TestDaF tests German as it is used at university: following a lecture, reading a long academic text, describing a graph in writing and explaining your opinion out loud. It sits between CEFR levels B2 and C1, which is the level German universities expect from students who will study in German.

The test is the same everywhere in the world, so a certificate earned in Delhi carries the same weight as one earned in Berlin. That is the main reason Indian applicants like it. Unlike DSH, which is set by each university, TestDaF can be taken in India and used for many applications at once. There is no entry requirement, but you should be comfortable at B2 before you book. Below that, the tasks feel very fast.

Who Needs to Take the TestDaF Exam?

You need TestDaF if you plan to study a German-taught degree and your university asks for proof of language skills. Here is how it usually plays out.

  • German-taught bachelor's and master's programmes: universities ask for TestDaF, DSH, Goethe C1 or telc C1 Hochschule. Read the admission page of your programme, because each university sets its own rule.
  • Direct admission without Studienkolleg: if your school or degree qualifies you for direct entry, a strong language certificate is the main thing left to prove.
  • Career and research plans in German: a TDN 4 or TDN 5 result shows employers and supervisors that your academic German is solid.

You may not need it at all. Many English-taught programmes ask for IELTS or TOEFL and only a basic level of German. If that is your route, our Masters in Germany guide and our Bachelors in Germany guide explain how the language rule changes by programme. If your school certificate is not accepted for direct entry, the Studienkolleg route usually asks for B1 or B2 German instead, so TestDaF can wait until later.

Not sure if you need TestDaF or a different German exam? Tell us your course, your university shortlist and your current German level. Our mentors will check the language rule on each programme page and tell you which certificate to book.

TestDaF Exam Pattern

Most candidates in India take the digital TestDaF on a computer at an authorised centre. The total time is 190 minutes, which is about 3 hours 10 minutes, plus breaks. All four papers are taken on the same day.

Section Duration What you do
Reading (Leseverstehen) 55 minutes Read several academic and everyday texts and answer questions on main ideas, details and the writer's view
Listening (Hörverstehen) 40 minutes Listen to dialogues, interviews and lecture extracts, generally played once, and answer questions
Writing (Schriftlicher Ausdruck) 60 minutes Two tasks: describe and interpret a graphic, then write a structured argument on an academic topic
Speaking (Mündlicher Ausdruck) 35 minutes Seven tasks spoken into the computer, such as giving information, describing a graphic and defending a position

There is also a paper-based version, but it is offered in Germany only. The digital test has more dates and faster results, so it is the sensible choice for applicants in India. The speaking section is recorded and marked later by trained raters, so you talk to a screen rather than to an examiner.

TestDaF Syllabus: What Is Tested?

The TestDaF syllabus has no fixed grammar list or vocabulary book. It checks whether you can handle real university situations. Topics come from student life, science, society, media, education and work, and the language is formal.

  • Reading: you must find the main argument, match statements to a text and work out what the author implies. Speed matters, because you cannot read every word slowly.
  • Listening: lecture extracts and academic conversations test whether you can follow a line of reasoning and note key details on a single hearing.
  • Writing: in the first task you turn data from a graphic into clear German prose. In the second you take a position, give reasons and examples, and use formal connectors correctly.
  • Speaking: you present information, compare options, react to a situation and argue a view within short time limits. Clear structure scores better than long, complicated sentences.

In short, the TestDaF syllabus rewards organised, academic German. Many B2 learners know enough grammar but lose points because they have never practised describing a graph or building an argument under a timer.

How Is the TestDaF Score Calculated?

TestDaF does not give one overall mark. You receive a separate level for each skill, called a TDN (TestDaF-Niveaustufe), and a TDN 3, 4 or 5 appears for Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking. A skill below TDN 3 receives no level.

Level Approximate CEFR What it means for admission
TDN 5 C1 (upper range) Strong result, meets the highest language requirements
TDN 4 Upper B2 to lower C1 The usual requirement, often written as "TDN 4 in all four skills" or "4x4"
TDN 3 B2 Accepted by a few programmes, sometimes if other skills are higher
Below TDN 3 Under B2 No level awarded for that skill

Here is a simple example. A candidate scores TDN 4 in Reading, Listening and Speaking, and TDN 3 in Writing. That is a good result, but it misses the usual 4x4 rule. Some universities will accept it and others will not, so check each programme before you apply. Balanced practice matters more than being excellent in one skill.

Digital results are usually released in about three weeks, and the paper version takes longer. Competitive programmes can ask for TDN 5 in some skills, so confirm this on the course page.

TestDaF Exam Fee, Dates and Registration in India

You register online through the official TestDaF portal. Test centres in India cannot take registrations directly. Digital sessions are listed through the year, and dates published for late 2026 include 12 November and 10 December. Registration usually closes about two weeks before the exam, and Indian centres fill early, so book well ahead.

The published TestDaF exam fee is EUR 210 for the digital test. The fee is set by country and centre, and Indian guides quote different amounts, so treat any figure you read online as a guide and confirm the exact price in your portal before you pay. In India the test is available at Goethe-Institut and Max Mueller Bhavan centres, including New Delhi, along with some partner centres.

  1. Create your My TestDaF account. Use your name exactly as it appears on your passport.
  2. Pick a date and a centre. Choose the nearest city. For applicants from Delhi and North India, New Delhi is the usual option.
  3. Upload your photo and ID details. Your passport is the safest ID to use, because it is what you will carry to the centre.
  4. Pay the fee online. Keep the receipt and the confirmation email.
  5. Check your admission notice. It lists your reporting time and the rules for the day.

If you want help fitting the exam date around your university deadlines, our services team can plan the timeline with you.

What Happens on TestDaF Test Day

Reach the centre early with your passport and your admission notice. Phones, smartwatches and notes are not allowed at your desk. The four papers run in one sitting with short breaks, so the day is tiring, and the speaking section comes when your focus is already low.

Do at least two full mock tests in one sitting before the real day. It builds stamina, and it shows you which section is dragging your score down. Test the headset and the microphone at the start of the speaking paper, and speak steadily rather than fast.

How to Prepare for the TestDaF Exam

TestDaF preparation depends on your starting point. Learners who already have a solid B2 often need a few focused months, while learners coming up from B1 need longer. Practise the exact tasks the exam sets, not just general German.

  • Reading: read newspaper features and university websites in German, then summarise each in two sentences. Practise skimming for the main point first.
  • Listening: use lecture recordings and news podcasts. Listen once, take short notes, then answer questions from memory, since the exam does not repeat most audio.
  • Writing: practise describing graphs in a fixed pattern (topic, main trend, comparison, conclusion) and write argument essays with a clear thesis. Time yourself at 60 minutes.
  • Speaking: record your answers to sample prompts and listen back. Check your structure, your pace and how often you pause.
  • Official model tests: use the model papers from the TestDaF-Institut, since they show the real task types and timings.
  • Feedback: ask a trainer to correct your writing and speaking, because you cannot see your own recurring errors.

If you are in North India, our German language classes in Delhi take you from A1 up to the B2 and C1 levels needed for university German, with mock tests along the way. You can also read how we support other test takers on our exam preparation page.

TestDaF vs DSH vs Goethe C1 vs telc C1 Hochschule

Four German tests are commonly accepted for admission. They differ in who sets the exam, where you can sit it and how it is scored, so pick the one your university names.

Feature TestDaF DSH Goethe-Zertifikat C1 telc C1 Hochschule
Set by TestDaF-Institut Individual universities Goethe-Institut telc GmbH
Same worldwide Yes No Yes Yes
Taken in India Yes Usually only in Germany Yes At selected centres
Result format TDN 3 to 5 per skill DSH 1, 2 or 3 Pass or fail at C1 Pass or fail at C1
Validity No expiry No expiry, tied to the university No expiry No expiry

A common path for Indian students is to learn German to B2 or C1, take TestDaF from Delhi and apply to several universities with one certificate. If you are already in Germany, DSH can be cheaper, but it is set by each university and cannot be reused everywhere.

Common Mistakes in the TestDaF Exam

  • Booking the exam at B1 level and hoping speed will fix the gap.
  • Ignoring the four-skill rule, so a TDN 3 in one skill blocks admission despite three strong scores.
  • Never practising graph description, then losing marks in the first writing task.
  • Memorising speaking answers instead of learning a flexible structure.
  • Registering late, when the Delhi centre has no seats left for your target date.
  • Booking TestDaF for an English-taught programme that only asks for IELTS or TOEFL.
