The DSH exam (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang) is the German language test that individual universities in Germany run for their own applicants. It has a written part and an oral part, and it is graded at three levels: DSH-1, DSH-2 and DSH-3. Most degree programmes ask for DSH-2, which means at least 67% in both parts. This guide explains the DSH exam pattern, DSH syllabus, DSH score rules, DSH exam fee, where to take it and how to plan your DSH preparation, so you can decide whether it fits your Germany plan.
DSH proves that your German is good enough to follow lectures, read academic texts and write assignments at a German university. Unlike TestDaF, which is one standard test held worldwide, the DSH is set and marked by the university where you sit it. Every university writes its own papers, but all follow a common framework, so the levels are meant to be comparable.
There is no entry requirement, but you need strong B2 German to have a fair chance. The tasks use academic language, and the written paper is long. Candidates can use a monolingual German dictionary in the written exam, and there is no limit on how many times you can retake it, although both parts must be taken in the same exam period.
You take the DSH if you apply for a German-taught degree and your university accepts it as proof of language skills. In practice, three groups of students choose it.
Most applicants from India who apply from home choose a test they can take before travelling, because the DSH is normally held at universities in Germany. If you are still comparing routes, our Masters in Germany guide and Bachelors in Germany guide explain how language rules change by programme. If your school certificate needs a preparatory year, our Studienkolleg page shows how German language study fits into that route.
The DSH exam pattern has two stages. The written exam comes first. Only candidates who reach at least 57% in the written part are invited to the oral exam, which takes place on a later day.
| Part | Duration | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Listening comprehension | Set by the university | Listen to a lecture, take notes, then answer questions and write a short text from your notes |
| Reading comprehension | Set by the university | Read an academic text and answer questions on content and argument |
| Academic language structures | Set by the university | Work with grammar and word forms typical of scientific German, including transformations and paraphrases |
| Text production | Set by the university | Write a structured text of roughly 250 words from a graphic or short source material and give your reasoned view |
| Oral exam | About 15 to 40 minutes, depending on the university | Prepare a graphic and prompts, then present and discuss the topic with examiners |
The whole written exam usually takes between about three and five hours in total, depending on the university, and it is divided into the four parts above. Some universities weight the parts differently. One published example uses a 2 to 2 to 2 to 1 split across text production, listening, reading and language structures. Always read your own university's exam rules, because timing, word limits and weighting change from place to place.
The DSH syllabus has no set word list. It checks whether you can work with the kind of German you meet in a first-year lecture hall. Topics are general academic ones, and no special subject knowledge is expected.
The language structures section is where many learners lose points. Practise turning verbs into nouns and rebuilding sentences in a more academic form, since it is a skill that regular conversation classes rarely cover.
Both the written and the oral parts are marked as a percentage of the maximum score. Your overall level is set by the lower of the two results, so you need the required percentage in each part.
| Level | You need | Approximate CEFR | What it usually means |
|---|---|---|---|
| DSH-1 | At least 57% in both parts | B2 | Passed, but often too low for direct admission |
| DSH-2 | At least 67% in both parts | C1 | The standard for most degree programmes |
| DSH-3 | At least 82% in both parts | Upper C1 | Top result, useful for language-heavy subjects |
Here is a simple example. A candidate scores 84% in the written exam but only 60% in the oral exam. The overall result is DSH-1, not DSH-3, because both parts must reach the level. Balanced preparation matters more than one very strong paper.
Your certificate lists the total level and a breakdown of results in each area. Programmes for subjects such as German studies, law or medicine may ask for DSH-3, so check the course page before you plan.
You register directly with the university language centre, not through a central portal. Each university announces its own dates, often once or twice before a semester starts, and sets its own deadlines. Some universities let outside candidates sit the exam and others limit it to their own applicants and students, so read the rules first.
The DSH exam fee depends on the university. Guides commonly quote a range of about EUR 50 to EUR 160, and some universities charge extra for a retake, so confirm the exact amount with the language centre. Because the exam is normally held in Germany, add travel and stay costs to your budget if you plan to sit it there.

Book Free Counselling →Bring your passport and your exam confirmation. The written exam is long, so plan your breaks and bring water if it is allowed. You may use a monolingual German dictionary, but it will not save you if you spend too long looking words up, so use it only when you must.
The oral exam is held a few days later. You receive a graphic and several prompts, get a short time to prepare, then present and discuss with the examiners. Talk in complete, organised sentences and give clear reasons, since the aim is to show academic thinking.
DSH preparation takes longest if you start from B1. For a learner with solid B2 German, a few focused months on academic tasks can be enough. Follow the exact tasks of your target university, and use its sample papers as your guide.
If you study in North India, our German language classes in Delhi take you from A1 to the B2 and C1 levels that university German needs. You can also read how we support test takers on our exam preparation page.
All four tests are used for admission, but they differ in who runs them, where you can take them and how they are scored. Choose the test your university names.

A common path for applicants in India is to prepare for TestDaF or Goethe C1 at home and apply from India. Students already in Germany, or already enrolled in a Studienkolleg, often sit the DSH locally. If a university accepts a DSH taken elsewhere, that is its own decision, so ask in writing before you rely on it.
The DSH exam is a German language test for university admission, set and marked by German universities. It has a written part and an oral part.
You need at least 57% in both the written and oral parts for DSH-1, 67% for DSH-2 and 82% for DSH-3. Most degree programmes ask for DSH-2.
DSH-2 is the usual requirement. Some subjects, such as law or German studies, may ask for DSH-3, and a few programmes accept DSH-1, so check each course page.
The fee is set by each university. Guides quote a range of about EUR 50 to EUR 160, so confirm the exact amount with the language centre.
The DSH is normally held at universities in Germany. Indian applicants who want to test before travelling often choose TestDaF or Goethe C1 instead.
DSH is written by individual universities and is usually taken in Germany. TestDaF is one standard test held worldwide, including in India, and it is scored from TDN 3 to 5.
In the written exam, candidates can generally use a monolingual German dictionary. Check the rules of your university for the exact allowance.
Yes. There is no limit on attempts, but you must sit both parts in the same exam period, and partial results do not carry over. Our German language classes in Delhi can help you build your weakest skill before a retake.
