Student forex is the process of converting Indian rupees into the currency of your study destination and moving that money abroad legally, safely and at a fair rate. It covers your first remittance for tuition and the blocked account, a forex card for daily spending, and the tax rules that apply when you send money out of India. Getting this right saves real money and keeps your visa documents clean.

$250,000 Yearly LRS remittance limit per person
2% TCS above ₹10 lakh, self-funded (from April 2026)
0% TCS when the remittance is loan-funded

What Does Student Forex Actually Cover?

Once your offer letter and visa are in hand, you have to move real money abroad. Student forex covers three separate jobs: your first big remittance for tuition or a blocked account, an ongoing way to spend and receive money abroad such as a forex card or a foreign bank account, and the tax rules that apply to every transfer. Handled well, this is a paperwork exercise. Handled badly, it means a bad exchange rate, a blocked payment, or a visa document that does not match what your bank actually sent.

This guide explains the rules once, so you do not have to relearn them for every country. If you are also finalising your admission, read our Germany, UK or USA destination pages for the visa-specific funds you need to show.

The Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS)

Every outward transfer from India runs through the RBI's Liberalised Remittance Scheme. It lets a resident individual, including a student, send up to USD 250,000 abroad in a financial year for approved purposes such as education, living expenses and medical costs. Your bank or forex provider is the authorised dealer that processes the transfer and reports it against your PAN.

The USD 250,000 limit is generous for almost every student, and it applies per person, per financial year, added up across every bank you use. If your family sends money through more than one bank, the totals still count together, so keep track of what has already gone out.

TCS on Education Remittances: What You Actually Pay

Tax Collected at Source (TCS) is an advance tax your bank collects at the time of the transfer. It is not an extra cost. It shows up in your Form 26AS and you claim it back or adjust it against your tax when you file your return. From 1 April 2026, the rules for education remittances are simpler than before.

How the Remittance Is Funded TCS Rate (from April 2026)
Education loan from a recognised bank or financial institution 0%, on the full amount
Personal savings or family funds, first ₹10 lakh in the financial year 0%
Personal savings or family funds, amount above ₹10 lakh 2%
Other LRS purposes not linked to education (investment, gifts, property) 20% above ₹10 lakh, unchanged

The ₹10 lakh threshold is counted across every remittance you make in a financial year for personal, non-loan purposes, not per transaction and not per bank, so add up your transfers if you use more than one provider. If your family takes an education loan that qualifies under Section 80E and remits through it, the transfer stays free of TCS even above ₹10 lakh. Rules like this are revised in most budgets, so confirm the current rate with your bank before a large transfer. This page explains the general rules and is not tax advice; for your own remittance, check the current figures with your bank or a chartered accountant.

Not sure how much TCS your remittance will attract? Our mentors work out your funding mix, loan status and remittance total, and tell you the actual TCS you should expect before you transfer a rupee.

Ways to Send Money Abroad for Your Studies

Method Best For Watch Out For
Bank wire transfer Large one-time payments like tuition and the blocked account Bank exchange rates are usually the weakest, and fees can be hidden in the rate
Specialist forex or education payment platforms Tuition payments direct to the university, often with a locked rate Check the platform is authorised and the university actually uses it
Forex card Daily spending, rent, groceries and ATM withdrawals abroad Card-loading fees, inactivity charges and weak rates on off-brand cards
International debit or credit card Backup spending and emergencies Foreign transaction fees and dynamic currency conversion charges

Compare the total cost, not just the headline rate. A "zero markup" forex card can still carry a card-issuance fee, a reload fee and an inactivity charge, so read the fee schedule before you commit. For your first tuition payment, banks and dedicated education payment platforms are usually more reliable than a personal wallet app, because they issue the formal remittance documents your university and visa office expect.

Choosing a Forex Card for Study Abroad

  • Multi-currency vs single-currency. A multi-currency card lets you load several currencies on one card, useful if you will travel within Europe or move countries later. A single-currency card is simpler if you are staying in one country.
  • Locked-in rates. Most forex cards fix the exchange rate at the time you load money, which protects you from rupee swings between loading and spending.
  • Fee structure. Compare issuance fees, reload fees, ATM withdrawal fees, and inactivity or dormancy charges. A card that looks free to issue can still cost more over a year than one with a small upfront fee.
  • Reload from India. Check that parents can reload the card from India through NEFT, RTGS, IMPS or UPI, since you will likely need top-ups during the year.
  • Acceptance and support. A card backed by Visa or Mastercard with 24-hour support matters more once you are actually abroad and something goes wrong.

Documents You Need for a Student Remittance

  • PAN card and passport.
  • University offer or admission letter.
  • I-20, CAS, visa letter or the equivalent document for your destination.
  • A Form A2 declaration, which your bank or forex provider fills with you at the time of the transfer.
  • Education loan sanction letter, if the remittance is loan-funded.
  • Bank statements showing the source of funds, especially for a self-funded transfer.

Keep the receipts and the Certificate of Foreign Inward Remittance or the outward remittance advice from your bank. Universities and visa offices sometimes ask for these later, and your TCS credit in Form 26AS depends on the transaction being recorded correctly.

How to Plan Your Student Forex Step by Step

  1. Work out your total remittance for the year, including tuition, a blocked account or proof of funds, and living costs.
  2. Decide how it is funded: education loan, personal savings, or a mix, since this changes your TCS.
  3. Compare rates across two or three providers for your large one-time transfer, not just your regular bank.
  4. Choose a forex card for daily spending, and get it issued before you fly if possible.
  5. Complete the Form A2 and keep every receipt for your bank, university and visa file.
  6. Track your remittances against the ₹10 lakh threshold and the USD 250,000 annual limit if you send money more than once.
  7. Claim your TCS credit when your family files the income tax return for that year.

Common Mistakes Students and Parents Make

  • Only checking one bank's rate. Rates and fees vary enough between providers to matter on a large transfer.
  • Forgetting to add up transfers across banks. The ₹10 lakh threshold is cumulative, not per bank.
  • Not declaring the education loan properly. The 0% TCS only applies when the loan is clearly linked to the remittance.
  • Losing remittance receipts. These are needed for the TCS credit and sometimes for the visa file.
  • Choosing a forex card only on the advertised rate. Reload, ATM and inactivity fees add up over a year.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the LRS limit for sending money abroad for education?

Under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme, a resident individual can remit up to USD 250,000 in a financial year for education and other approved purposes. This is far more than most students need for a single year of tuition and living costs.

How much TCS do I pay on an education remittance?

From 1 April 2026, remittances funded through a recognised education loan carry 0% TCS. Self-funded remittances carry 0% up to ₹10 lakh in the financial year and 2% on the amount above that. TCS is an advance tax, and you can claim it back when you file your income tax return.

Is TCS an extra cost or a tax I get back?

It is not an extra cost in the long run. TCS is collected upfront and shows up in your Form 26AS. You claim it as a credit against your tax liability when you file your return, or get it refunded if you have no liability.

Should I use a forex card or a bank transfer?

Use a bank transfer or a specialist education payment platform for large one-time payments such as tuition and the blocked account. Use a forex card for daily spending, rent and ATM withdrawals once you are abroad, since it usually gives a better rate than a regular debit card.

Does an education loan remittance ever attract TCS?

No, as long as the loan is from a recognised bank or financial institution and is clearly linked to the remittance. This exemption applies to the full amount, not just the first ₹10 lakh.

What documents does my bank need for a student remittance?

Typically your PAN, passport, admission letter, visa document, a completed Form A2, and either your education loan sanction letter or bank statements showing the source of funds. Keep the transfer receipt for your records.

Can I send money for tuition in more than one transfer?

Yes. Many families split tuition into instalments or send living expenses separately through the year. The ₹10 lakh TCS threshold and the USD 250,000 annual limit apply to your total remittances for the year, so track them across every transfer and every bank.
