The Chancenkarte, or Opportunity Card, is a German residence permit that lets qualified non-EU professionals enter Germany for up to 12 months to look for a job, without a job offer. You qualify with a degree or vocational qualification, basic German (A1) or English (B2), proof of funds and at least six points on the official points system. It replaced the older job seeker visa for non-graduates in June 2024.
The Chancenkarte is a job search permit built for skilled people who are not yet employed in Germany. You arrive first, look for a qualified job on the ground, and switch to a work residence permit once you find one. Employers can interview you face to face, and you can take short trial jobs to prove yourself.
It is not a student visa and it is not for school leavers. You need a completed university degree or a vocational qualification of at least two years, and the qualification must be state recognised in the country where you earned it. If you are a Class 12 student, your realistic routes are a Studienkolleg followed by a degree, or Ausbildung in Germany.
There are two routes, and most Indian applicants use the second one.
You can check whether your Indian university is listed as recognised in the anabin database, and start a formal recognition procedure if you want the extra points. Recognition can take time, so begin early if you plan to use it.
You need at least six points. Within the language, experience and age categories only the highest level counts, so you cannot add A2, B1 and B2 together. English points are a separate pool and add to your German points.
| Criterion | Points |
|---|---|
| Qualification partly recognised in Germany | 4 |
| German at B2 or higher | 3 |
| German at B1 | 2 |
| German at A2 | 1 |
| English at C1 or higher | 1 |
| 5 years of experience in the last 7 years | 3 |
| 2 years of experience in the last 5 years | 2 |
| Age up to 35 | 2 |
| Age 35 to 40 | 1 |
| Legal stay in Germany of 6 months or more in the last 5 years | 1 |
| Qualification in a shortage occupation | 1 |
| Spouse or partner qualifies and applies with you | 1 |
Here is how that plays out in real life. A 28-year-old software engineer with three years of experience and an English C1 certificate scores 2 for age, 2 for experience, 1 for English and 1 for a shortage occupation, which makes six. A 32-year-old commerce graduate with four years of experience and German B1 scores 2 for age, 2 for experience and 2 for language, which also makes six. You need to prove every point you claim, so use the official Make it in Germany self-check before you apply and confirm the numbers, since the rules can be updated.
If your English needs a proper score, AbroadUp's IELTS preparation course and our exam preparation team can help you reach B2 or higher.
Not to apply. English at B2 satisfies the baseline, and you can qualify on the points route without any German if your other points add up. In practice, though, German is the easiest way to reach six points, and it decides how many employers will even read your CV. Moving from A1 to B1 in your search year is realistic with regular study, and it opens far more jobs.
Start before you leave India. AbroadUp's German language courses and German language classes in Delhi cover A1 to C2, and our note on how long it takes to learn German in India gives a realistic timeline.

Most applicants show funds through a blocked account, and the money remains yours to spend at the monthly limit. Some embassies also accept a formal declaration of commitment from a resident in Germany, or a part-time job contract that reaches the required amount. Some missions ask for proof of a return ticket, so check what your embassy accepts before you buy anything. The monthly figure is revised each year, so use the current number.

Book Free Counselling →Most refusals come from thin paperwork, not from a weak profile. Experience letters that do not match your CV, unclear degree names, or points that you cannot prove are the usual causes. AbroadUp's visa and services team reviews your file, matches each claimed point to its evidence and checks it against the embassy's current checklist before you submit.
You can search for a qualified job anywhere in Germany, work part-time for up to 20 hours a week, and take trial jobs of up to two weeks per employer to prove your skills. You cannot enrol in a degree programme on this permit, and you cannot rely on public benefits. Going over the 20-hour limit puts your residence at risk, so keep your contracts and payslips.
Once you find a qualified job, you apply at the local foreigners' authority to change your residence permit without leaving the country. Degree holders with a qualifying salary can move to the EU Blue Card, and others usually move to a skilled worker residence permit. Blue Card holders can often apply for permanent residence after about 27 months, or 21 months with B1 German. Rules and salary thresholds change, so verify the current figures.

The Chancenkarte, or Opportunity Card, is a German residence permit that lets skilled non-EU nationals stay for up to 12 months to look for a job, without a job offer. It works through a points system unless your qualification is already fully recognised in Germany.
You need at least six points on the points route. Points come from partial recognition of your qualification, German and English skills, professional experience, age, earlier stays in Germany, shortage occupations and a spouse applying with you.
No. You need either German at A1 or English at B2 as a minimum. German helps you score points and find jobs, but you can qualify with English B2 and strong points in other categories.
In 2026 the requirement is about €1,091 a month, which is €13,092 for a full year. Most applicants use a blocked account, and some embassies accept a declaration of commitment or a part-time job contract. Check what your embassy accepts.
Yes, part-time for up to 20 hours a week, plus trial jobs of up to two weeks per employer. The purpose of the permit is to find a qualified full-time job, after which you change to a work residence permit.
No. You need a completed university degree or a vocational qualification of at least two years. Class 12 students usually go through a Studienkolleg to a degree, or through Ausbildung.
If you have no qualifying job offer, you have to leave Germany when the card expires. If you hold an offer that cannot yet be converted into a normal permit, a follow-up card may be possible, so speak to the foreigners' authority early.
