A nursing career abroad for Indian nurses runs through professional registration, not a college admission. In Germany you get your qualification recognised (Anerkennung) and reach around B2 German. In the UK you register with the NMC, prove your English, pass the CBT and OSCE, and take a sponsored NHS or care job. If you have only finished Class 12, Germany's paid nursing Ausbildung is the most direct route.

B2 German level usually needed
IELTS 7.0 Band the NMC asks for
12 to 24 months Typical time to German recognition

How a Nursing Career Abroad Works

Nursing is a regulated profession almost everywhere. You cannot use the title of registered nurse, or work independently as one, until the local regulator accepts your qualification. For Indian nurses that usually means a B.Sc Nursing, Post Basic B.Sc Nursing or GNM qualification, valid registration with your state nursing council or the Indian Nursing Council, and often some clinical experience. Some regulators assess a GNM case by case, so check your curriculum against their requirements before you start.

Germany and the UK are the two destinations Indian nurses ask about most. Ireland, Australia and Canada run their own registration systems, and we can walk you through those if they fit your plans better.

Germany vs UK at a Glance

Factor Germany UK
Regulator and first step State authority recognises your qualification (Anerkennung) NMC checks your eligibility and registration
Language German at B2 is commonly required for full recognition IELTS Academic 7.0 in most bands (6.5 in writing) or OET grade B
Exams Adaptation period or Kenntnisprüfung if gaps are found CBT in India, then OSCE in the UK
Pay while completing steps You work in a supervised role while recognition finishes You can work as a pre-registration candidate until the OSCE
Job market Strong shortage of nursing staff Hiring of overseas nurses has slowed since 2024

Nursing in Germany for Indian Nurses

You send your documents, including a detailed syllabus and your registration certificate, to the recognition authority of the German state where you plan to work. Most Indian nurses receive a notice of deficiencies (Defizitbescheid), which lists the gaps against the German standard. That is normal and not a rejection. You then close the gaps in one of two ways: an adaptation period (Anpassungslehrgang), which is supervised work in a German care facility, or a knowledge test (Kenntnisprüfung). After that you receive full recognition and can use the title Pflegefachperson.

German language is the real gatekeeper. B2 is commonly required for full recognition, and some routes let you enter with lower German, such as A2, while you finish language study and recognition inside Germany. Many nurses enter on a recognition visa or a skilled worker visa and work in a supervised role during the process. Commonly quoted gross pay is about €2,200 to €2,800 a month during the adaptation period and about €2,800 to €3,500 once you are recognised, with variation by state and employer. Many guides put the whole process at 12 to 24 months.

Some government-linked programmes, such as Triple Win, recruit nurses from India and can offer language support, so ask whether your state agency runs one. AbroadUp's German language courses and German language classes in Delhi cover A1 to C2, and our note on how long it takes to learn German in India helps you plan. For the wider picture, read our Germany destination page.

Nursing in the UK for Indian Nurses

The NMC route has four parts. First you apply for an eligibility check with your qualification and registration. Then you prove your English with IELTS Academic at 7.0 in listening, reading and speaking and 6.5 in writing, or OET at grade B with a C+ in writing. Next you pass the Test of Competence, which begins with the computer-based test that you can take in India. Finally you take the OSCE, a practical exam in the UK, which most employers let you attempt within 12 weeks of starting work.

An NHS trust or care provider sponsors your visa, usually through the Health and Care Worker route. AbroadUp's IELTS preparation course and our exam preparation team can help you reach the English scores. You can also read our page on studying and working in the UK for related routes.

Be realistic about the job market. NMC data show that overseas-educated nurses made up 26.4 percent of new joiners in 2025 to 2026, down from 39.1 percent the year before and about 49 percent at the peak. Roles still exist, but offers are harder to get than they were, so do not spend money on an agency until you have checked its record and any employer promises in writing.

If You Have Only Finished Class 12

You cannot register as a nurse abroad without a nursing qualification, but you can start the qualification there. Two routes are common.

  • Nursing Ausbildung in Germany. A three-year paid vocational training that leads to the Pflegefachperson qualification. You earn a training salary, pay no tuition, and need German at around B1 to B2 depending on the employer. Read about Ausbildung in Germany for the visa and language rules.
  • A nursing degree in the UK or Ireland. These are full international-fee degrees with English requirements similar to registered nurses, and they cost far more than Ausbildung. They suit families who can fund the years and want a UK or Irish qualification from day one.

Nursing Abroad Roadmap Step by Step

  1. Confirm your qualification and registration and gather your syllabus, transcripts and experience letters.
  2. Choose Germany or the UK based on your language strengths, budget and patience with paperwork.
  3. Start your language preparation: German B2 for Germany, or IELTS or OET for the UK.
  4. Begin registration: Anerkennung with the right German state, or the NMC eligibility check.
  5. Secure a job offer from a verified employer, in writing, with a clear contract.
  6. Apply for your visa with the employer's documents and your registration evidence.
  7. Finish the remaining steps abroad: adaptation period or knowledge test in Germany, OSCE in the UK.

Costs and Who Usually Pays

Item Who Usually Pays
Language or English exam and coaching You
Document attestation and translation You
Recognition or registration fees You, sometimes reimbursed by the employer
Adaptation period in Germany Employer pays a salary during the period
OSCE in the UK Often paid by the employer for the first attempt
Flights and first-month costs You, unless the employer contributes

The UK government's code of practice on international recruitment says candidates should not be asked for upfront fees. Treat any agent who asks for a large payment in return for a guaranteed job as a warning sign, and put every promise in writing. AbroadUp's visa and services team reviews your file before you submit anything.

Career Growth After Registration

Registration is the start, not the finish. In Germany, registered nurses can specialise in areas such as intensive care, anaesthesia or emergency care, move into practice development, and later apply for long-term residence subject to the rules at that time. In the UK, nurses progress through the NHS pay bands into senior, specialist and management roles, and many add a postgraduate qualification. Experience abroad also opens doors to other countries that recognise your registration.

Common Mistakes Indian Nurses Make

  • Delaying language study. B2 German and the NMC English bands each need months of practice.
  • Sending a diploma without a syllabus. A thin file usually produces vague gaps that are hard to close.
  • Paying an agent before checking the employer. Verify the hospital or care provider directly.
  • Assuming the UK guarantees a job. Recruitment of overseas nurses has fallen, so apply widely.
  • Ignoring state differences in Germany. Recognition rules and timelines vary by state authority.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Indian nurses work in Germany?

Yes. Indian nurses can work in Germany after their qualification is recognised by the relevant state authority. Most receive a list of gaps and then complete an adaptation period or a knowledge test, usually while working in a supervised role.

What German level do nurses need?

B2 is commonly required for full recognition. Some routes allow entry with lower German while you complete language study inside Germany, but strong German at work is what decides how far you go.

What IELTS score does the NMC require?

The NMC accepts IELTS Academic with 7.0 in listening, reading and speaking and 6.5 in writing, or OET with grade B in each part and C+ in writing. Check the NMC website for the current rule and combined-sitting conditions.

Is GNM accepted for nursing abroad?

Regulators assess GNM qualifications individually. They compare your curriculum and clinical hours with their own standards, so gather a detailed syllabus early and ask each regulator about your case.

How long does it take to work as a registered nurse abroad?

Many guides put Germany at 12 to 24 months from starting language study to full recognition, and the UK at roughly 9 to 15 months from application to your first registered shift. Both depend on exam results and how quickly your documents are verified.

How much do nurses earn in Germany?

Commonly quoted gross pay is about €2,200 to €2,800 a month during recognition and about €2,800 to €3,500 after it. The exact amount depends on the state, employer and collective agreement.

Can I start a nursing career abroad after Class 12?

Yes, but you study first. Nursing Ausbildung in Germany is a paid three-year training that needs around B1 to B2 German. A nursing degree in the UK or Ireland costs full international tuition and needs a strong English score.
