The digital Master Test (dMAT) is a computer-based aptitude test that becomes a mandatory part of APS certification for Indian students applying to German Master's programmes from the summer semester 2027 onward. It applies to applicants with an undergraduate degree in Engineering, Commerce/Accounting/Finance/Economics, or Business/Management, unless an exemption applies. g.a.s.t. runs the test with German universities, separately from APS document verification.
| Topic | Details |
|---|---|
| What it is | Standardised, computer-based aptitude test with a core module and a subject module |
| Who needs it | Indian graduates in Engineering, Commerce/Accounting/Finance/Economics or Business/Management applying for a German Master's from summer semester 2027, unless exempt |
| Who is exempt | Bachelor's and PhD applicants, confirmed exchange or double-degree students, and anyone who registered for APS online or shipped APS documents before 29 June 2026 |
| Test fee | €150.00, paid to g.a.s.t. at registration |
| Where it is taken | g.a.s.t. test centres in India, Berlin and Kathmandu |
| Who administers it | g.a.s.t. runs the dMAT; APS India separately handles document verification |
| Does a low score block APS? | No. The dMAT is not pass/fail |
| Validity | The certificate does not expire |
Planning a Master's in Germany for the 2027 intake? The dMAT is now a document you need alongside your APS certificate, so check your exemption status early. For the full journey from admission to visa, see our guide to studying in Germany.
The dMAT is an aptitude test for graduate-level applicants, built by German universities and g.a.s.t. and originally supported by the DAAD. From 2026 it is an additional element of APS documentation for Indian students applying to Master's programmes in Germany, and it is being rolled out in phases, starting with selected applicant groups.
It is not a subject-knowledge exam. It measures general cognitive aptitude and the ability to apply reasoning to typical academic problems, not memorised facts. All questions are single-choice, and the India-relevant module is in English.
The General Academic Module is required for applicants applying for summer semester 2027 or later whose undergraduate degree falls in one of these fields:
| Undergraduate Field | dMAT Required? |
|---|---|
| Engineering | Yes, unless exempt |
| Commerce, Accounting, Finance, Economics | Yes, unless exempt |
| Business / Management | Yes, unless exempt |
| All other fields (Science, Arts, Medicine, etc.) | Not currently required |
If your degree sits between categories, for example Engineering Management, Business Analytics, Industrial Engineering, Data Science or Financial Technology, classification follows APS India's official Affected Fields List, not self-assessment. Check your programme against that list before assuming either way.
This is the part most applicants miss. You do not need to take the dMAT if any of the following apply:
A fresh APS application submitted later follows the rules in force at that time, not those of an earlier, completed procedure.
The dMAT has two parts, taken back to back with a break in between.
Core Module. Tests general study aptitude through three subtests: figure sequences, mathematical and logical reasoning, and pattern recognition (Latin squares).
Subject Module. For Indian APS applicants this is the General Academic Module, which tests the ability to apply cognitive and analytical skills to general academic problem-solving. Each item combines a typical academic problem with related follow-up questions, so the format rewards applied reasoning over rote learning.
Total duration is 3.5 hours including the break. g.a.s.t. also runs subject-specific modules (Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering) for programmes such as RWTH Aachen's MSc Battery Science and Technology in Engineering, plus a module for the Göttingen Data Science MSc. These apply only if you apply directly to those programmes.
The fee is €150.00, collected by g.a.s.t. at registration and separate from APS India's fees. Refunds are available under certain conditions, so check the terms on the registration page. If you fall sick or hit an issue on test day, contact g.a.s.t. at kontakt@gast.de, not APS India, since g.a.s.t. handles registration, payment, scheduling and technical support.
Budget for the dMAT fee, the APS fee and, if you need financing, your loan and blocked account. Our services team supports each of these steps.
The dMAT certificate does not replace formal recognition of your university or degree, and it does not replace an anabin check. If your institution is listed as H+/- or H- in anabin, or its status is unclear, a strong dMAT score cannot make up for it. Check your institution's anabin status before you register for the dMAT and before you submit your APS application.
Scores are benchmarked against all participants across all centres and dates, not just your own session. The certificate is issued digitally through the g.a.s.t. participant portal and never expires, so it stays valid for future application cycles.
German universities decide independently how to weigh dMAT results. A strong score does not guarantee admission, and a weak one does not mean automatic rejection. Build your shortlist first with our course and university selection service, before you lock in a test date.
| Milestone | Date | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Registration opened | 29 June 2026 | Closed |
| Registration deadline | 15 September 2026 | Closed |
| First India test | 26 September 2026 | Held |
| Results and certificates issued | 12 October 2026 | Upcoming |
| Next sitting | Planned for Q1 2027, date to be announced | Check d-mat.de |
Registration, payment and certificate delivery all run through the g.a.s.t. participant portal, not through universities or APS. Winter 2026/27 applicants are unaffected, because the first certificates only arrive on 12 October 2026 and the requirement targets summer 2027 and later intakes.
Missed the first sitting? There is no cap on attempts, but each one needs its own registration, fee and test date. If you are aiming for summer semester 2027, a Q1 2027 sitting may produce a certificate after many universities' December and January deadlines. Plan backwards from your target intake and submit your other APS documents early. Our application and admission process guide shows how to sequence each step.

Book Free Counselling →If your preferred centre is full, you must pick another available location, because neither APS India nor g.a.s.t. can reserve seats outside the standard booking flow. Our teams in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Pune, Chennai and Hyderabad can help you plan centre booking alongside the rest of your timeline.
g.a.s.t. publishes official preparation material for each module, including sample tasks, worked solutions and short walkthrough videos of the interface for figure sequences, mathematical equations, Latin squares and the subject module screen. No instructions appear once the test begins, so go through this material to learn the on-screen format, not just the content.
General aptitude practice in numerical reasoning, logical sequences and pattern recognition is useful groundwork, but the official g.a.s.t. samples remain the best guide to question style and difficulty. If you are also preparing for other admission exams, our exam preparation team can help you sequence TestAS, TestDaF or GRE dates so they do not clash with your dMAT date. Building your German skills too? Look at our German language classes in Delhi and language courses.
As of 2026, two German universities use dMAT results as a selection criterion:
| University | Programme |
|---|---|
| RWTH Aachen University | MSc Battery Science and Technology in Engineering |
| Georg-August-Universität Göttingen | MSc Data Science |
For everyone else, the dMAT matters through its role inside APS verification, which affects anyone applying to a German Master's in the eligible fields from the 2027 intake, whichever university they target.
The dMAT does not replace any other part of your application. Depending on your profile, your checklist will also include:

The dMAT (digital Master Test) is a standardised aptitude test developed by g.a.s.t. and German universities. From 2026 it is a required part of the APS documentation and verification process for Indian graduates applying to German Master's programmes in certain fields.
Only for applicants whose undergraduate degree is in Engineering, Commerce/Accounting/Finance/Economics, or Business/Management, applying to start a German Master's in summer semester 2027 or later, unless they qualify for an exemption.
Bachelor's and PhD applicants, students in confirmed exchange or double-degree programmes, applicants outside the three affected fields, and anyone who registered for APS online or shipped their APS documents before 29 June 2026 or already holds a completed APS certificate.
The dMAT fee is €150.00, paid directly to g.a.s.t. at registration.
Yes. APS India can begin verifying your documents, but your final APS certificate is issued only once your dMAT certificate is submitted and checked against g.a.s.t.'s results.
No. The dMAT is not pass/fail. A low score does not automatically lead to refusal; it is a required additional document alongside the standard APS document verification.
No. The dMAT does not replace anabin or formal recognition of your university or degree. Check your institution's anabin status separately before registering.
The total duration is 3.5 hours, including a break between the core module and the subject module.
At g.a.s.t. test centres in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Kolkata, Mananthavady, Mumbai, New Delhi and Pune, with additional centres in Berlin (Germany) and Kathmandu (Nepal).
No. The certificate is valid indefinitely once issued.
Results are reported as a percentile rank (compared with all other test-takers) and a dMAT score from 0 to 200 (average 100), calculated for the core and subject modules separately and combined into a total.
g.a.s.t. (Gesellschaft für Akademische Studienvorbereitung und Testentwicklung) handles registration, centre booking, technical support and certificate issuance through its participant portal. APS India remains separately responsible for document verification.
The first India sitting was held on 26 September 2026, with certificates issued from 12 October 2026. A further sitting is planned for Q1 2027. Check d-mat.de for the confirmed date.
