Every year, thousands of Indian families look at MBBS abroad because private medical college fees in India are very high and government seats are very few. The choice can work, but only if you follow NMC rules from day one. A wrong university or a missing NEET result can leave you with a degree you cannot use in India. This guide covers what NMC requires, what it costs country by country, and how to pick a university without being misled.
Short answer: An MBBS from abroad is valid in India only if you qualified NEET-UG before admission, studied for at least 54 months in English, completed a 12-month internship at the same foreign institution, and then clear the FMGE screening test. Total cost is usually around Rs 15 to 45 lakh depending on the country, and only a minority of candidates clear FMGE on the first attempt.
Is MBBS Abroad Valid in India?
Yes, if you meet the conditions set by the National Medical Commission under its Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate (FMGL) Regulations 2021. These apply to Indian students who joined a foreign medical course on or after 18 November 2021. The main rules are:
- NEET-UG qualification is mandatory. The cut-off is the 50th percentile for General and EWS, 40th for SC, ST and OBC, and 45th for PwD. A high score is not needed, but a qualifying one is.
- The course must run for at least 54 months of academic study and be taught fully in English.
- You must complete a 12-month internship at the same foreign institution. Splitting it across hospitals is not allowed.
- The degree must be recognised as a licence to practise in the country where you studied.
- You need an NMC Eligibility Certificate before you sit the screening test.
- You must pass FMGE, conducted by NBEMS. The National Exit Test (NExT) was meant to replace it, but as of mid-2026 FMGE is still the exam in force and no start date for NExT has been notified for this group.
- After FMGE, you complete a 12-month rotating internship at an NMC-recognised hospital in India before full registration. Confirm the current internship rule with NMC when you finish your course.
One thing to know: NMC does not publish a list of approved foreign universities. Compliance is judged on the course, not on a brand name, so you have to verify each university yourself.
The FMGE Reality Check
FMGE is the part most agents skip. Reported pass rates are low. The June 2025 session saw an 18.61% pass rate (7,452 of 37,207 candidates), and a January 2026 session was reported at 25.4% of 42,872 candidates. That means roughly one in five to one in four candidates clear it, and many need more than one attempt.
This does not make MBBS abroad a bad choice. It means you should budget time and money for FMGE preparation and pick a university where Indian students actually pass. A university with a pass rate below 20% for Indian students over the last three years is a red flag.
Country-Wise Cost of MBBS Abroad for Indian Students
These are approximate total budgets for the full course, including tuition, hostel and food. They do not include flights, FMGE coaching or visa renewals. Always ask the university for its official fee schedule in writing before you pay.
| Country | Approx. total budget | Why students choose it | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kyrgyzstan | Rs 15 to 28 lakh | Lowest entry cost | Big quality gap between universities, so screen carefully |
| Uzbekistan | Rs 18 to 28 lakh | Growing number of English-medium programs | Newer programs, so check the track record |
| Kazakhstan | Rs 18 to 30 lakh | Moderate cost and structured courses | Cold climate and local language needed for clinicals |
| Russia | Rs 20 to 35 lakh | Large, long-established medical universities | Payment routes and travel can be complicated |
| Georgia | Rs 25 to 40 lakh | European setting and English-medium teaching | Higher fees and varied clinical exposure |
| Philippines | Rs 30 to 45 lakh | English is widely spoken | Different course structure, so confirm NMC compliance |
For comparison, the total fee at many private medical colleges in India can run well above Rs 50 lakh and sometimes crosses Rs 1 crore, which is why families look abroad.

- Valid passport
- Class 10 and Class 12 marksheets and certificates

How to Choose a Safe University
- Check the course meets FMGL rules, with 54 months of study and a 12-month internship at the same institution.
- Ask for the last three years of FMGE results for Indian students from that university, with proof.
- Check clinical exposure: its own teaching hospital, patient load, and whether Indian students rotate in English.
- Expect to learn the local language. Lectures may be in English, but patient conversations usually are not.
- Get fees, hostel, food and exam costs in writing, including any yearly increase.
- Speak to current Indian students and recent graduates, not only the agent.
- Walk away from anyone who says NEET is not needed or guarantees FMGE success. NMC checks NEET at registration, not the university.

Who Should and Should Not Go for MBBS Abroad
MBBS abroad suits students who qualified NEET but missed a government or affordable private seat, have a fixed family budget, and are ready to prepare for FMGE from the first year. It is a weaker fit if your family would struggle with the fees, if you want to practise in India without a second exam, or if you are not comfortable living far from home for about six years. Compare it honestly with options in India before you decide. If medicine is your goal but MBBS abroad is not the right fit, also look at a nursing career or a physiotherapy career abroad, or PG medicine (MD) after your MBBS.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Skipping NEET because the university does not ask for it
- Choosing the cheapest university without checking pass rates
- Paying large amounts to an agent before verifying the university
- Not planning for FMGE preparation time and cost
- Assuming NExT has already replaced FMGE for current students
