Ausbildung is Germany's dual vocational training system. You spend part of the week working at a company and part in a vocational school, you earn a monthly training salary from the first day, and you pay no tuition. It usually lasts two to three and a half years and ends with a state-recognised qualification. What Is Ausbildung in Germany?

Ausbildung is a paid apprenticeship with a classroom attached. Around three or four days a week you train inside a company, learning the job from experienced staff. The other one or two days you attend a vocational school (Berufsschule) for theory. At the end you sit an exam set by the relevant chamber, such as the IHK for commercial and technical trades or the HWK for craft trades, and receive a certificate that employers across Germany recognise.

Demand is strongest where Germany has staff shortages. The German level employers expect depends on the field, and patient-facing work asks for the most.

Pick a trade you can picture doing for years, not just the one with the most openings. Nursing trainees, for example, often earn more than most first-year apprentices, but the work is demanding and needs strong German from the start.

Eligibility Criteria for Ausbildung

• Education: Class 10 or 12 from a recognised board. Most trades want Class 12, and some technical or healthcare courses prefer a science background.
• German language: a B1 certificate is the usual minimum for the visa, and B2 for healthcare and nursing. Recognised providers include Goethe-Institut, telc, ÖSD and TestDaF. IELTS is not accepted for this purpose.
• Training contract: a signed Ausbildungsvertrag with a German employer, before you file the visa.
• Approval: for in-company training, the Federal Employment Agency normally has to approve the placement.
• Age: the Ausbildung visa itself has no legal upper limit, but most employers prefer applicants between 18 and 35, and the separate visa for searching a training place stops at 35.
• Documents: passport, attested certificates with translations, CV, motivation letter, police clearance and health insurance.

German Language Level: B1 Is the Minimum, B2 Is Safer

Vocational school is taught entirely in German, and so is the workplace. At B1 you can follow daily conversation, but technical words in a classroom or on a factory floor are much easier at B2. Employers and chambers often recommend B2 for that reason, and many will not shortlist you below it.

Training Salary and Costs

The legal minimum training pay for anyone starting in 2026 is €724 gross a month in the first year, and it rises each year of training. Where a collective agreement applies, pay is higher. Nursing trainees often start at roughly €1,340 to €1,490, and the average across all trades was around €1,133 a month in 2024. Treat every figure as a range, since pay depends on the employer, the trade and the region.

Your real costs before departure are the German course and exam fees, document attestation and translation, the visa fee, your flight and a first-month deposit for a room. How to Apply for Ausbildung Step by Step

1. Choose your trade and check what German level and school background it asks for.
2. Reach B1, ideally B2, and book your Goethe, telc or ÖSD exam.
3. Prepare your application documents: a German-style CV, a motivation letter, translated certificates and your language certificate.
4. Apply to employers through company career pages, the Federal Employment Agency job board and specialist Ausbildung portals. Start 9 to 12 months before your target start date.
5. Attend online interviews and be ready to explain why you chose this trade and why you want to train in Germany.
6. Sign the training contract once you receive an offer.
7. Apply for your national visa at the German Embassy in New Delhi or one of the consulates in India, then travel and register your address.

Ausbildung Visa for Indian Applicants

Non-EU applicants train on a national visa under Section 16a of the German Residence Act. You apply after you hold a training contract, and the file normally includes your passport, contract, language certificate, education documents, health insurance and proof that you can support yourself. Many Indian applicants also add a police clearance certificate and a motivation letter.

Money proof depends on your setup. In a dual Ausbildung, your training salary usually counts as proof. Life During Ausbildung

You are an employee from day one, with a training contract, social insurance contributions and paid holiday. Most contracts include a probation period at the start, and you sit an intermediate exam and a final exam during the programme. Side jobs are restricted on a training residence permit, so read your permit conditions before you take extra work.

The first months are the hardest for most Indian trainees. Technical German, a new city and a new workplace all arrive together. Trainees who spent extra time on job-specific vocabulary before leaving, such as tool names or patient care terms, usually settle much faster.

After Ausbildung: Jobs and Permanent Residence

Many employers offer a permanent job to trainees who pass their final exam. Once you hold a German vocational qualification and a job in that field, you can move to a skilled worker residence permit. Permanent residence is usually possible after about two years of work in a qualified job, with contributions to the pension system and B1 German, though the exact conditions change, so confirm them with the authorities.

Some graduates go on to a Meister or Techniker qualification, and some later choose to study at a university of applied sciences, depending on the rules of the state. Ausbildung does not close the university door. It gives you a paid start and work experience first.
