The PTE exam (Pearson Test of English) is a computer-based English proficiency test that measures your speaking, writing, reading and listening skills on a scale from 10 to 90. Universities and visa authorities in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK and several other study abroad destinations accept the PTE exam as proof of English ability. Most students need an overall PTE score between 50 and 65 for a degree abroad, and the entire test wraps up in one sitting of roughly two hours. This guide explains the PTE exam pattern, PTE syllabus, fees, registration, scoring and PTE preparation in plain terms, so you can plan your test with confidence.
The PTE exam is a standardised English test owned and administered by Pearson, and it is one of the fastest-growing English tests among study abroad aspirants because of its quick turnaround and fully computer-based format. If you are applying to a university or a visa in an English-speaking country, there is a good chance PTE will be on the list of accepted tests.
There is no pass or fail in the PTE exam. You receive a score for each communicative skill and an overall score on the Global Scale of English, and every university or visa authority sets its own required number. That is why the first step in any PTE preparation plan is to check the score your target course actually needs. Our exam preparation page explains how we help students plan this step alongside their university shortlist.
Pearson offers more than one version of the PTE exam, and each one is built for a different purpose. Booking the wrong one can mean your result is not accepted where you need it.
| Test | Best For | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| PTE Academic | University admissions worldwide, and Australia/New Zealand visas | The version most study abroad students take |
| PTE Academic UKVI | UK university admission and UK student visas | Same test content as PTE Academic, approved for UK Home Office purposes |
| PTE Core | Canadian immigration and citizenship applications | Built specifically around everyday and workplace English |
As a general rule, choose PTE Academic for a university application, PTE Academic UKVI if your destination is specifically the UK, and PTE Core only if your goal is Canadian immigration rather than admission. Always confirm the exact test your university or visa authority accepts before you book.
The PTE syllabus is built around three sections attempted in a single sitting, with no scheduled break. Pearson updated the format in August 2025, adding two new speaking tasks and stretching the total duration slightly, so make sure any PTE preparation material you use reflects this current pattern.
| Section | Duration | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Speaking & Writing | About 54 to 67 minutes | Read aloud, repeat sentence, describe image, retell lecture, summarise written text, essay, and two newer tasks: respond to a situation and summarise group discussion |
| Reading | About 29 to 30 minutes | Fill in the blanks, multiple-choice questions, and re-order paragraphs |
| Listening | About 30 to 43 minutes | Summarise spoken text, fill in the blanks, and multiple-choice listening questions |
Speaking and Writing are tested together in the PTE exam, which is one of the biggest differences from other English tests. The test opens with a short, unscored personal introduction to help you settle in, then moves through the three timed sections in order. Most tasks in the PTE syllabus are integrated, meaning a single task, such as Read Aloud or Repeat Sentence, feeds into more than one skill score at once, so strong performance in high-weight tasks lifts your overall PTE score efficiently.
Each communicative skill, speaking, writing, reading and listening, is scored on the Global Scale of English, from 10 to 90, and your overall PTE score is a weighted combination of your performance across all tasks. Scoring is done almost entirely by AI, with Describe Image and Retell Lecture reviewed by both AI and a human examiner for quality checks. This is why the PTE exam has one of the fastest turnaround times among English tests.
Because scoring criteria reward clarity, consistency and correct pronunciation over natural-sounding flair, PTE preparation tends to respond well to structured, repeatable practice. Your PTE score stays valid for 2 years, and you can take the PTE exam as many times as you like, as long as you book and pay the fee each time.
The PTE score you need depends on your course, university and destination country. The ranges below are typical, but requirements shift, so check each course page directly.
| Goal | Typical Overall PTE Score | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor's degree abroad | 50 to 58 | Some courses ask for a minimum score in each communicative skill too |
| Master's degree | 58 to 65 | Business, law and engineering programmes often sit at the higher end |
| MBA | 60 to 70 | Top schools may ask for 70 or higher |
| Nursing and healthcare programmes | 65 to 79 | Professional registration bodies often set their own minimums |
| Skilled migration | Depends on the country and points system | Higher PTE scores typically earn more points under Australia's system |
Many students pick the PTE exam first and decide on a country afterwards, but it usually works better the other way round. If Australia or New Zealand is your focus, our Australia and New Zealand destination pages outline typical requirements. For Canada, our Canada destination page explains where PTE Core and PTE Academic fit into admissions and immigration. If the USA is on your list, check our USA destination page for how PTE compares with other accepted English tests there.
The PTE exam fee in India is currently around ₹18,900, inclusive of GST, and this rate applies across PTE Academic, PTE Academic UKVI and PTE Core. Fees are set by Pearson and can change, so check the official booking page before you pay. Registration is done entirely online through the Pearson PTE website.
The PTE exam is available almost every day of the year at Pearson-authorised test centres, and you can often book a slot with less lead time than other English tests. Even so, book at least three to four weeks ahead during busy application seasons. If your timeline is tight, our services team can help you plan your application around your PTE test date.

Book Free Counselling →One of the biggest draws of the PTE exam is speed. Results are typically available within 48 hours, or about two business days, which is considerably faster than most other English tests. You can view your scores on the My PTE dashboard, and once your results are out, you can send your scorecard to as many universities as you like, at no extra cost. This makes the PTE exam a strong option for students working with tight application deadlines.
Most students need 4 to 8 weeks of steady PTE preparation, depending on their starting level and target score. Begin with a full mock test to establish your baseline, then focus on your weakest section, since a low score anywhere can pull down your overall PTE score.
Use official Pearson practice material and scored practice tests for your final mock rounds, since they reflect how the actual AI scoring engine evaluates responses. If you prefer guided support, structured PTE coaching with detailed task-by-task feedback can help you close specific score gaps faster. Our exam preparation courses include mock tests and personal feedback so you can track your PTE score improvement week by week.
The PTE exam is not the only English proficiency option. Many universities accept several tests, though visa authorities can be stricter about which ones they recognise. Always check accepted tests for both your course and your visa before choosing.
| Test | Score Scale | Speaking Format | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| PTE Academic | 10 to 90 | Recorded on a computer | Fast results and fully computer-based, integrated testing |
| IELTS | Bands 0 to 9 | Face-to-face with an examiner | Universities and immigration in many countries |
| TOEFL iBT | 0 to 120 | Recorded on a computer | Many US universities |
| Duolingo English Test | 10 to 160 | Recorded at home on a computer | Universities that accept it, but rarely for visas |
Students who type and speak into a microphone comfortably, and who want the fastest possible results, often find the PTE exam a better fit than a face-to-face speaking test.
A good score depends on your goal. For most bachelor's programmes, 50 to 58 is common, and for master's programmes, 58 to 65. A score of 65 or higher is considered strong, and 79 and above is excellent.
Most universities and immigration authorities accept a PTE result for 2 years from the test date. Some institutions have their own rules, so check before you apply.
There is no limit. You can retake the PTE exam as often as you like, as long as you register and pay the fee each time.
Take PTE Academic for university admission in most countries, PTE Academic UKVI for UK visa purposes, and PTE Core only if your goal is Canadian immigration rather than an admission offer. Always confirm with your university or visa authority.
PTE results are usually available within 48 hours, making it one of the fastest English tests for score turnaround.
It depends on your current English level and comfort with speaking into a microphone under AI scoring. Most students find Speaking and Writing the most demanding, but steady PTE preparation with timed mock tests improves scores in a few weeks.
Yes. Universities usually accept alternatives such as IELTS, TOEFL or Duolingo, and some accept a medium of instruction certificate instead. The visa authority may still ask for a specific test, so check both requirements. Our language courses page and services team can help you plan around test and cost preferences.
