To study in France, you can enrol in a public university for around €2,770 a year at bachelor's level, pick from hundreds of English-taught programmes, and work up to 964 hours a year while you study. At a public university, a realistic total budget is about €10,000 to €18,000 a year including rent and food. That makes France one of the better value options in Europe, especially if you also want a strong degree and easy travel across the Schengen area. This guide covers universities, costs, the visa, work rules and life after graduation in plain terms.
Indian students choose to study in France for low public tuition, respected degrees and a base in the middle of Europe. Public universities charge far less than most private universities in the USA or UK, and the state also helps with housing costs and healthcare. Degrees follow the European credit system, so they are recognised across the continent.
The country is also strong in the fields that hire internationally: engineering, aerospace, artificial intelligence, business, luxury management, fashion and hospitality. Paris is a large hub for technology, finance and consulting, and cities such as Lyon, Toulouse and Grenoble have their own industry clusters and student communities.
The trade-off is language. Many master's and business programmes run in English, but daily life, part-time jobs and most bachelor's degrees work much better if you speak French. If cost is your biggest concern, compare France with our budget friendly degree options and the Study Free In Germany guide before you shortlist.
France has two parallel routes. Public universities are open to most applicants and charge fixed, low fees. Grandes écoles, which include top engineering and business schools, are more selective and often private, with higher tuition and stronger industry links. Both award recognised degrees, but the cost and admission process differ a lot.
Rankings help, but the right choice depends on your course, language and budget. Public universities are cheaper and broad, while grandes écoles offer smaller cohorts and closer employer ties at a higher price.

Business schools and private institutions cost far more, often €10,000 to €40,000 a year in tuition alone. In recent years, public tuition for non-EU students has been set at €2,770 for a bachelor's and €3,770 for a master's, but fees are reviewed, so confirm the current figure with your institution.

France has several ways to lower the bill. Registering with the French health system is free for students. Many students receive housing benefit from the CAF, called APL, which reduces rent. University restaurants serve full meals at a fixed low student price of around €3.30. Scholarships include the Eiffel Excellence Scholarship for master's and PhD students, the Charpak scholarship for Indian students, and merit awards from individual universities. Eligibility and amounts change, so check each programme's page.
Our services team can help you compare education loans and prepare the financial documents the French consulate expects to see.
Even if your course is in English, learning French pays off in housing, jobs and friendships. Our language courses page shows what training is currently offered, and our exam preparation courses can help you reach the English score your course needs.
September is the main intake for almost every course. Some business schools and a few programmes also start in January or February. Application portals usually open from October to December, and many deadlines fall between January and March, so start your research 10 to 12 months before your course begins. Business schools often admit in rounds, and the early rounds have the best chance of scholarships.

Book Free Counselling →Indian students need a long-stay student visa, also called a VLS-TS. It also works as your residence permit for the first year once you validate it. You usually apply through the France-Visas portal and then attend an appointment at the visa centre. Typical documents include:
After you arrive, validate your visa online within the first three months. Skipping this step can cause problems later, including issues with renewing your permit. Requirements, fees and procedures change, so confirm the latest steps on the official French government and Campus France websites before you apply.
If you want your file checked before you submit, our visa support team can review your documents and point out gaps early.
Yes. International students can work up to 964 hours a year, which comes to about 20 hours a week if spread evenly. Jobs must pay at least the French minimum wage, currently around €12 an hour before tax. Common jobs include campus roles, retail, hospitality and tutoring. Speaking French makes the search much easier.
After a master's degree, many graduates can apply for a temporary residence permit of about 12 months to look for work or start a business in France. If you find a job that fits your degree, you can switch to a work permit. The bachelor's route is less direct. Immigration rules are updated regularly, so check the current conditions before you plan around a specific route.

Not always. Many master's and business programmes are taught in English. French-taught courses need about B2 level, and knowing French helps with housing and part-time jobs in every case.

A master's degree takes 2 years, or 120 ECTS credits. Some engineering diplomas take longer because they combine bachelor's and master's level study.
Germany is usually cheaper because most public universities charge little or no tuition, while France charges a fixed public fee. France offers more English-taught business and luxury programmes. Compare both on our Germany destination page and the Study Free In Germany guide.
